RANGIOTU

FOOTBALL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) RANGIOTU, May 19. Tho Huia juniors joui-neyed to Sanson last Saturday when they defeated the homo toam by 20 points to 3. Since, the commencement of tlie season the games in this grade have been most disappointing as tho opposing teams on every occasion have not been able to fiold their full forces. In the local team’s opening match of the season against Oroua Downs, only 13 men opposed them for a time and finally a 14th man straggled on to tho field. In the second match only 10 men arrived, and last Saturday’s game at Sanson was another disappointing example of the home team especially failing to muster something near a full team. Furthermore, followers and enthusiasts of the Rugby codo are nsked and expected to pay a shilling to watch such exhibitions. For the winners tries were scored by J. Nairne (2), Taylor Brown (1) F. Bond (1), B. Kapia (1); S. Gilmour, converted ono try and kicked a penalty goal. A fine penalty goal by M. Cockburn was the only score secured by the homo team. Next Saturday tho Huia team will be playing Rongotea on the local ground and a very keen contest is anticipated as both these teams have so far an unbeaten record. NOTES. A cart fully loaded with firewood and owned by Mr W. Hines came to grief in front of tho local post office quito recently. Fortunately, the driver escaped without a scratch, while the horse was quickly and safely cleared from the entanglement before anything serious happened to it. On the following day, Saturday, and almost at the same locality a car ran into a mob of sheep, killing three. The driver of tho car, however, straight away paid for the value of the stock killed, and there is no question that both parties are fully satisfied. The welcome rain experienced during tho wock-end has proved most beneficial to the whole district, and a furthr downpour would not be objected to by local farmers. Owing to the abnormally dry spell experienced, mushrooms have not been so plentiful as in previous years, but tho recent rain will no doubt bring on a fair crop before tho season expires.
