FOXTON

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, May 9. A social evening was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs H. Osborne on Wednesday when members of the old Methodist choir foregathered to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs W. Thornber and wish them bon voyago on their trip to England. Mr and Mrs D. Ball have arrived back from a trip to Australia. Mr L. C. Couch has left Foxton on transfer to the I’almerston North branch of the Commercial Bank as teller. Mr 11. N. Tait, of Greymouth, fills Mr Couch’s position at the local branch. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. The monthly meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was presided over by Mr J. K. Hornblow (president). The chairman reported that during the month a deputation from the chamber had waited on Hon. Mr Ransom, Minister for Publio Works, with a request that, failing the river cuts being put through , consideration bo given to the raising of the Whirokino portion of the Wellington-Aucklond main highway to make it safe in flood time. The Minister agreed to give the matter careful consideration and said that ho was favourably impressed with the proposal. Messrs D. Christie and G. F. Smith, members of the special committee set up to give consideration to the question of holding a shopping night locally, reported that the committee had discussed the proposal and had decided to hold the matter up pending a decision in regard to the introduction of community lighting in Foxton. It was decided to recoinmond the inauguration of community lighting. Air H. Osborne reported that tenders for the tar-6ealing of tho Foxton-llima-tangi highway were closing the following day and it was very gratifying to note that definito steps were being token to complete this road. Tho secretary tabled plans and specifications which had been drawn up by Major Wilkes for a hangar at tho beach and said that thero was an oiler from a local resident to erect the building free of cost provided tho material was found. Mr Speirs estimated the cost of an iron shed on the lines indicated at £SO. The chairman said that it would bo necessary to confer with tho Harbour Board before any steps wore taken to erect a hangar. Mr Alsop said that there was a seventeen acre reserve held by the Harbour Board which extended around the point and bounded' on the old river bed. If the board were approached it might permit the erection of a liangur thero. It was decided to write and ask Major Dalton to inspect tho area with a view to having it declared an air port; to thank Captain Cercer for the interest he was taking in Foxtorr; and to notify the chairman of the Foxton Harbour Board of the action it was proposed to take and to ask him to be in attendance when Major Dalton made his inspection. The matter of obtaining permission to erect tho hangar wiill be placed before tho next meeting of the Harbour Board.
