Barnard, who acted as pilot for the Duchess of Bedford recently, is preparing for a flight round the world. Captain Barnard states that he is confident of covering 25,C00 miles in thirty days.
Captain Barnard, it will be remembered, acted as pilot for the Duchess of Bedford on her voyage to India and back, and oil the recent flight to Capetown and back. Captain Barnard has a fine record as an airman. MISS JOHNSON’S PROGRESS. DARING FLIER LEAVES KARACHI DELHI, May 11. A message from Karachi states that Miss . Amy Johnson, the aviatrix, arrived there at 4.10 o’clock on Saturday afternoon. Miss Johnson said that the journey down the Persian Gulf was uneveiitl .il except for terrific heat and difficulty in landing at Bunderabbas. Between Aleppo and Bagdad her machine was forced to earth by a gale and sandstorm, otherwise everything went well. Miss Johnston left at dawn to-day for Allahabad and Calcutta, en route to Australia. It was reported on Saturday that some anxiety was felt regarding Miss Johnson. There had been no news of her at Bushire or Bunderabbas. RECORD FLIGHT TO KARACHI. AHEAD OF HINKLER’S TIME. (British Official Wireless.) Received May 12, 11.0 a.m. RUGBY, May 11. Miss Amy Johnson reached Karachi after a six days’ flight, thereby establishing a fresh record for the distance by a sole flier. She was then two days ahead of Captain Bert Hinkler, who holds the record for the quickest flight to Australia. Her most exciting experience hitherto occurred between Bagdad and Bunderabbas, when she encountered an extremely violent sandstorm. She decided to land, but the machine was blown about on the ground until she blocked the wheels with luggage. For a time she could see only a few yards ahead, and when the weather cleared she found that she had landed on the only smooth patch for miies.
