MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
MAINTENANCE OF CHILDREN. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., presided over the Magistrate’s Court to-day. On the application of Dorothy Lloyd, the Magistrate made an order against her father-in-law, Thomas Lloyd, horso trainer of Riccarton, ?or maintenance at the rate of 10s p° r week each in respect of his two grandchildren. Mr Ongley stated that the complainant’s husband, who was a son of Thomas Lloyd, had been apprehended at Dannevirke last Mondy on a warrant. He had failed to pay maintenance and had been sent to gaol. Every possible avenue of payment had been exhausted, and defendant was now in a better position to pay, as he had won a big race at Christchurch. VEHICLE ON FOOTPATH. Negligent obstruction of the footpath in Rangitikei Street with a motor vehicle was alleged against Leslie G. Harris. He pleaded not guilty,. Defendant said he had been given to understand by Mr P. G. Patton (Traffic inspector) that there was no offence in allowing a vehicle to overlap the footpath provided that there was sufficient rpom for the public to pass. The vehicle, which was a long one, was being filled from a bowser, and.oould not back in on account of danger to plate-glass windows. lhe entrance was straight across the footpath. , , Inspector Patton stated that a warning had previously been issued against the practice alleged. There was only sufficient room for people to- pass in single file. Next day the vehicle was driven right into the entrance. Defendant stated that there was a space of 3ft. 6in. or 4ft. left . for pedestrians. He was going under what the inspector had said, there was no deliberate intent to break the by-law, said defendant. Inspector Patton denied the accuracy of defendant’s statement. He said that as the case was the fust of its kind he would not press for a heavy penalty. “You seemed to have, blocked the footpath on this occasion,” observed the Magistrate to defendant in fining him 10s, with 10s costs. FINES FOR CYCLISTS. Penalties of 10s, with 3s costs, were imposed on L. R. Harland and F. Hansom when they were charged with cycling at night without lights. For riding on footpaths, F. Anderson and J. G. Gibaut were fined similar amounts.
