The weather was dull, but the wicket was good, lor the third day of the match between the Australians and Essex. Australia declared its innings closed with six wickets down for 264. Hurwod was brought on for the first time in the match when the score was six wickets for 64 runs and, with A’Beekett, kept the batsmen subdued, O’Connor taking 105 minutes to score twenty-five runs. After the luncheon adjournment, Griminett made' thd ' ball do things. O’Connor went out when he lunged at one from the googly bowler, while Hornibrook ended Bray’s 100 minute innings. Cutmore bit out gaily before he fell a victim to Hornibrook. Several catches were not accepted by the Australians, but Jackson snapped up one from- -Hipkin.. • • A’Beckett got life first wickets of the tour when be dismissed Sheffield and Smith in the same over.
