AUSTRALIANS WIN. ESSEX DISMISSED FOR 146, HORNIBROOK BOAVLS WELL. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received May 10, 10.5 a.m. LONDON, May 9. The weather was dull, but the wicket was good, lor the third day of the match between the Australians and Essex. Australia declared its innings closed with six wickets down for 264. Hurwod was brought on for the first time in the match when the score was six wickets for 64 runs and, with A’Beekett, kept the batsmen subdued, O’Connor taking 105 minutes to score twenty-five runs. After the luncheon adjournment, Griminett made' thd ' ball do things. O’Connor went out when he lunged at one from the googly bowler, while Hornibrook ended Bray’s 100 minute innings. Cutmore bit out gaily before he fell a victim to Hornibrook. Several catches were not accepted by the Australians, but Jackson snapped up one from- -Hipkin.. • • A’Beckett got life first wickets of the tour when be dismissed Sheffield and Smith in the same over. The innings ended after 220 minutes’ play, giving the visitors an easy victory by '207 runs. Following arc the detailed scores:— AUSTRALIA. The next match is against Yorkshire at Sheffield. Essex last year was twelfth in the county championship, among • ■ the 17 first-class counties. The team played 28 matches, won six, lost nine, won three on the first innings, and lost nine, and one match had no result. The unfinished matches in the championship are drawn games, but points are counted. Essex started last season badly with five defeats, but recovered somewhat later and finished twelfth, as compared with sixteenth in 1928. O’Connor was the team’s best man. He scored altogether over 2000 runs and took 53 wickets. Ho is a slow leg break bowler. Russell, Eastman, Hipkin and Nichols were also prominent. Under the now regulations last year each county played 28 matches. Points were scored as follows: —In drawn games five points were awarded to the side leading on the first innings and three to the . opponents* An outright win counted eight points. In a tie, or with no result on the first innings, four points were awarded each side, provided there had been six hours of actual play. Matches in which six hours were not played, and with no result, were not counted.
