GROUP SETTLEMENT IN OTAGO
STATE PURCHASE. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, April 14. The Minister 'of Lands, Hon. G. W. Forbes, announces that the purchase has been completed by the Government of a portion of Air and Airs J: —Beattie’s property at Cambrians, Central Otago, known as The Downs. The area concerned is 4793 acres, and has been purchased under the group settlement system on behalf of eight applicants, who are in a position to commence farming operations as soon as their respective sections are allotted to them. Grazing and mixed farming will be carried on by the new settlers.
The group system of land settlement enables intending settlers to select an area which, if apporved of, is purchased by the Government and allocated to these applicants, who are required to pay five per cent, of the cost. They are given an opportunity of acquiring the freehold in a period of 36J years, on the completion of the payment of the purchase money.
