FOXTON

(From Our Own Correapondent). FOXTON, April 14. Mr D. R. Barron, of Foxton, is at present spending a holiday in Wellington. Mr and Airs J. Martin, of Whyte Street, aro spending a holiday motoring in the southern portion of the North Island. Mr and Mrs T. L. Mills, of Feilding, were the guests of Mr and Mrs J. K. Hornblow during the week-end. Mr G. and Miss N. Woods, who were involved in a motor accident last week, are now reported to be making good progress towards recovery. Dr. G. Adams, who last week was elected president of -the New Zealand Rugby Union for the coming season, was some yoars ago a looal resident and during tho time that, ho was resident here he took a keen interest in Rugby both as a referee and official of the local club. The first football fixture of tho season was played on Easton Park on Saturday when Foxton met and defeated Shannon seniors by 14 points to three in a.match for the McLcllan cup, thus retaining possession of tiio covoted trophy won at the close of last season. The cup will remain in Foxton’s possession until tne homo team is defeated on its own ground. Mr P. McLeavy refereed. A young people’s rally was held in connection with tho 85th anniversary celebrations being conducted by the Presbyterian Church. There was a large attendance in tho schoolroom on Friday evening when Rov. W. H. Nicholas presided and introduced Rev. Mr Wilton and Air V. French, of Flock House, who delivered an address in tho absence of the Rev. AI. Catherwood, of Turakina. Pianoforte duets woro rendered by Misses J. Barron, J. and M. Alason; piano solo, Mr Guppies; vocal duet, Alisses King; solo, Aliss U. Thomson. Supper was provided and brought a close to a pleasant evening, Tho recent heavy rains have proved a great benefit to the farming community throughout this district and dried up pastures are olroady showing now growth. The weather has now turned much colder. GOLF CLUB.

The Herrington golf links were officially opened on Saturday in excellent wdathe? in the presence of a large crowd of players. Visitors were present from Levin and Shannon. Prior to the commencement | of play' Mr F. A. Mason (president) welcomed, the visitors and members and ox-1 pressed tho liopo that they would spend l an enjoyable afternoon on the links During the afternoon Canadian foursomes were indulged in, tho winning couple 1 being Air Stern and Aliss Goodwin ‘ (Foxton), who were presented with a pair , of golf balls at tho conclusion of play, j Afternoon tea was provided by tho ladies and supervised by Alesdames F. A. Alason and J. K. Hornblow. Players report the links to be in good condition and they should be well patronised this season. BOROUGH COUNCIL. Tho usual monthly meeting of the Borough Council was presided oyer by Air M. E. Perreau (Alayor). Replies wero received from the various local bodies in regard to the council’s proposal to set aside the Round Bush as a scenic reserve. The Palmerston North Borough Council agreed to support the I proposal, but all the others turned the matter down with the exception of tho Alanawatu County Council, which deferred the matter.—The Alayor regretted the action of tho majority of tho bodies in not supporting the suggestion and remarked that tho Palmerston North Council was evidently tho only broadminded body in the district. The council decided ’that it could not accept the responsibility of going on with the matter unsupported, but it was decided to draw tho attention of tho Government to the state of the bush and request it to fenco tlie reserve property in order to protect tho bush • from stock trespassing and damaging the growth of the native trees. It was decided to donate £2 2s towards the local obstetrical appeal. Considerable debate ensued on tho question of extending the Purcell Street footpath, but it was decided to hold this matter over and repair the road for the convenience of the ratepayers \ concerned. A resolution was passed authorising an exlonsion of .the council’s overdraft to £2OOO owing to the fact that 'the rates will be late in coming in this year as the revaluation of the council is not yet complete. Tho Horowhenua Rugby Council wrote accepting the council’s offer of the use of Easton Park for football purposes during 1930 for the sum of £7 10s. Tho council decided to assist the Foxton

Football Club by paying half the cost of installing a second floodlight on Easton Park, the cost not to exceed £5, provided the installation bo vested in the council. It was decided to ask the Power Board to supply the waterworks pump with current when required during the day time at a unit rate. A letter was received from the Minister of' Internal Affairs intimating that a conference of local bodies will be held in Palmerston North on May 29th in connection with the regional town planning scheme. — Tho appointment of a local representative at attend tho conference was held over until next meeting. The foreman '(Mr A. G. Huntley) reported that during tho month the following work had been carried out:—Carting metal and patching ruts Moutoa and San Son roads, grading Sandon Road, patching breaks in bitumen surface Johnston Street and Victoria Street, top dressing north end of Main Street. The main borough drain had been cleaned from the river to the north end of Spring Stroet and during the present month the foreman would continuo tho work of drain cleaning and also attend to patching and grading on various roads.
