WOODVILLE

A MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. WOODVILLE, April 14. Evidence that travellers through tho Manawatu Gorge run a great risk from falling rocks was exemplified to-day, when a commercial traveller, Mr H. B. Gould, of Wanganui, narrowly escaped death. A large piece of rock came down tho side of the hill at that part of the road appropriately named “Dovil’a Elbow,” crashing through the hood of the oar, just over tho head of the driver. A rib in tho hood, fortunately, deflected the rock, and missing Mr Gould by a hair’s breadth broke through a covering on the back seat, and finally finished on the floor of the car. Mr Gould’s hat was struck on tho side, which indicates what a cload call ho had. There is little doubt that had there been anybody else travelling with Mr Gould they would have been killed instantaneously. As it is, it is miraoulous how the driver escaped injury. GENERAL. Owing to clouds obscuring the moon, last evening, the eclipse was not visible from Woodviile. Quite a few people awaited the phenomenon. The Woodvillo Boys’ Band, under Conductor Lawn, assisted by members of the Dannevirke Boys’ Band, rendered a programme of music on the Dannevirke Domain yesterday atfornoon. * A collection was taken up to augment the band funds. FOOTBALL. The opening game of tho football season was played on the Recreation Ground. on Saturday, when Woodviile met a team from Dannevirke Old Boys’ Club Although from a playing point of view the weather was ideal, a keen wind made conditions unpleasant for spectators. Tho visitors carried too many guns for the local team, and had the advantage in all stages of the game. Woodviile fielded a poor team, many of their best playora being unavailable. The exhibition on the whole was very disappointing, but several local boys showed a great deal of promise. On the wing Jack Standoir gave a good display, while, other outstanding players for Woodvillo were, Joe Burlace, Reg. Jones, J. Charles and J_ Hutchinson' in the forwards, with J. Redwood best in the backs. Tho game ended: Dannevirke 14, Woodviile 3. PERSONAL. Miss Betty Cossum, of Kaponga, is at present on a visit to Woodviile aiid is staying with Mrs R. Richards, Woodlands Road. Mr and Mrs N. J. Gilbert and Mrs W. Nixon leave Woodviile to-morrow on a holiday trip to Auckland. Bishop Sedgwick and family who loft Woodvillo on Friday, on route to England, were farewelled at the railway station by a large number of friends. Mr and Mrs J. Hutchinson, of Papatawa, who have been on an extended motor tour of the North Island returned home on Saturday.
