FREEZING TROUBLE
RIVAL UNION FACTIONS. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 14. Evidence of tension and disagreement. between, factions in the Freezing Works Employees’ Union is furnished by the number of meetings held at the works to-day, at which lively debates occurred. At Islington the meeting lasted from 1iJ.30 o’clock until 4 p.m. A motion in favour of adopting a militant policy was rejected oy 320 votes tp 200. The men were addressed by Air Revell, secretary of the union, and by Air Hunt, the slaughterman whoso engagement was demanded by the men at the Finegand works. These two speakers represented the-views of the moderate and extreme sections, and the moderates had an overwhelming majority. There was no “go-slow” at the Islington works. At Bortlnvick’s works at Belfast there were several meetings, but killing proceeded at the normal rate. At Kainpoi the • killing rate averaged eight per hour per man, the normal rate being twelve. It is suspected that the holding of meetings is one method of reducing the killing rate, as the men work at the normal rate when working. No trouble occurred at Fairfield. “GO-SLOW” TACTICS. . Per Press Association. TTAIARU, April 14. The position at the freezing works in South Canterbury to-day was not as satisfactory as the companies would have liked. At Pnreora a start was not made until 9.20,a.m. Some time later it was observed that the slaughtermen were only killing at the rate of eight sheep per hour. These conditions prevailed throughout the day. At Smithfield the men commenced at 9.30 a.m., a meeting having been held up to that hour. Normal killing was then resumed. A further meeting was held during the lunch hour, lasting until 1.30 o’clock, when normal killing was again commenced.
