SECONDARY SCHOOLS
GOVERNING BODY MEETS. PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS. A meeting of the Board of Governors of the Palmerston North Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools and of the Technical School Committee was held last evening, Mr W. R. Birnie presiding. Also present were Mrs J. Aitchison, T. R. Hodder, J. W. Rutherfurd, M. H. Oram, W. L. Fitzhorbert, J. A. Nash, M.P., W. F. Durward and 0. Monrad. BOYS’ SCHOOL.' In his monthly report the rector of the Boys’ High School (Mr J. Murray) stated that the roll number was 388, the average attendance being 380. A fire escape from the small new dormitory at the hostel was necessary, the cost being estimated at £5 10s. With the advent of the Government’s new financial year, the school requirements in connection with the science block and extra accommodation should again be brought forward. Thanks to the courtesy of the Palmerston North Tennis Club in granting the school the use of its courts, the tennis championships were at present being competed for by a largo number of entrants. GIRLS’ SCHOOL. The ' principal of the Girls’ High School (Mrs M. Rhodes) reported that | the roll number was 274 and the average attendance 264.5. Seats were required outside for those girls who took their lunch, an estimate of the cost being £lO. From now on the ground would be too damp for them to sit on. Arrangements had been made for the school to hold a brief ceremony in commemoration of Anznc Day on April 24, commencing at 3.30 p.m. An invitation was extended to all members of the board to be present. The garden fete held at the school by the Parents’ Association on the afternoon of April 2 had proved a most successful function, resulting in about £95 being added to the funds of the association. The number of pupils in residence at the hostel was 17, the general health of the girls having been good. The spouting was in need of repair and also required a good cleaning out ready for the winter. It was decided to congratulate the staff and Parents’ Association for the fine work done in connection with the fete. TECHNICAL SCHOOL. In the course of his report Mr G. G. Hancox, director of the Technical School, stated that Mr W. S. La Trobe, Superintendent of Technical Education, had visited the school early in the month. Between 60 and 70 parents accepted the invitation to see the school at work on Thursday afternoon (yesterday). Counting only the school’s own students and not those from other schools, the full-time equivalent day school roll for the week ended March 8 was 434. The full-time equivalent staff was 24. During the summer the pupils had made full use of the Grey Street ground, tennis matches having been held almost every Saturday afternoon. The cricket team had done well, being defeated for the third grade championship by only one point. An application was recommended for a grant for the provision of additional stools for the science, cookery and art departments. The reports were adopted.
