EMPIRE TRADE POLICY.
ADVERTISING BRITISH GOODS. The Economic Preparatory Committee of the Association of British Chambers of Commerce recently published its contribution towards the joint suggestions of commercial men, shipowners and industrialists, regarding the formation of a permanent secretariat and the establishment of machinery to co-operate in economic problems. The main recommendation from .an Imperial point of view is an extension of the functions of the Empire Marketing Board. The committee expresses the opinion that the time has arrived to advertise British goods in the Dminions. “As matters stand,” it says, “oversea Empire producers of foodstuffs and raw materials have their goods freely advertised in the United Kingdom, while United Kingdom manufacturers have to rely on their own efforts to sell products throughout the Empire oversea.” The recommendation is that the board should be re-constituted in order to popularise goods and products from each part of the Empire in all other parts. Its object should le the encouragement of the exchange of goods throughout the Empire. The various Empire Governments should devise a trade policy within the Empire for the Empire, promoting constant development of every part. Among specific subjects for discussion at the next Imperial Conference the preparatory committee includes “conditions of marketing and distributing the Australian wool clip ” QUESTIONS IN COMMONS. In the House of Commons, Sir Nicholas Grattan-Doyle (Conservative) inquired whether the Government intended placing the Empire economic unity on'the agenda of the Imperial Economic Conference. The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr Snowden) said he was unable to make any statement regarding the agenda, which'was now being considered. Sir Nicholas Gnattan-Doyle: In view of the enormous interest oversea, will you urge Mr MacDonald to include the subject of economic unity in the agenda ? , Mr Snowden: If you are thinking about the Empire protectionist stunt, you can rest assured it will not Hbe placed on.the agenda.
