SOUTH ISLAND RAILWAYS.

MINISTER’S STATEMENT. WELLINGTON, April 9. Absorption of a further batch of men on the construction 6f the South Island Main Trunk railway was announced by the Minister of Public Works,. Hon. E. A. Ransom, yesterday, when intimating that the withdrawal of the party completing tho survey of the line was only temporary. It was explained by the Minister that the survey party had been removed to the Lewie Pass road survey, and would return as soon as the weather became too severe for working in that locality . “The position of the survey on which this party was engaged is such that it will not hinder the work of construction,” the Minister added. “Some 26 miles have been completely surveyed from Wharanui southward to a point about eight miles beyond the Clarence River, and including the Clarence Bridge site, but at the south end a party is still employed, and will be kept so employed on the survey from Parnassus northward. “Some eight miles have been completely pegged, and the trial line survey completed for several miles beyond this. • Ample work has been set out from the north end to keep the work fully in hand until the survey party returns.” The Minister added that yesterday he had authorised the placing of a further 50 men on the Parnassus end of the construction ot the line.
