REAR-ADMIRAL BYRD.
WELCOME AT WELLINGTON. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 8. An enthusiastic civic reception was accorded Rear-Admiral Byrd in tho Town Hall this evening. Addresses were given by the Minister of Labour, Hon. W. A. Veitch, on behalf of the Government, Dr. E. Marsden, Director of Scientific and Industrial Research, and the Mayor, Mr G. A. Troup, all of whom eulogised the work of the expeditjon in adding to exploratory and scientific knowledge and the laudable accomplishments of Rear-Admiral Byrd and liis associates. Admiral Byrd paid a warm tribute to the assistance given the expedition by the New Zealand Government, and said that his own people could not have shown more interest in the venture than had the New Zealand people. The expedition had added only little to wlrat had been accomplished at tho Pole by British explorers, who had been the real pioneers and pathfinders. Tho presentation of a kiwi mounted on greenstone and native wood was made to the Commander. When Admiral Byrd arrived in Wellington he brought with him a flag of the Wellington Rotary Club which he had carried on his flight over the South Pole. The flag will be presented to a representative of the club at a meeting of civic bodies shortly, at which Admiral Byrd will be the guest of honour.
