HALL SOCIETY AND OPENING CEREMONY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) J RANGIOTU, April 5. With the completion of the extensions and improvements to tho Rangiotu Hall extreme satisfaction was expressed at a meeting of the Hall Society held last Wednesday evening. Matters in connection with the opening ceremony, which is to take place this week, were fully discussed and are well in hand. The chairman (Mr Dixon) stated that the response from the leading vocal and instrumental talent from Palmerston North far exceeded his. expectations and the programme for the concert would be of a very high standard. Mr Linklater, M.P., would be present that evening to perform the opening coremony. It is confidently anticipated that the coming event, which will be followed by a dance with a professional orchestra in attendance, will be crowned with success. Moreover, the chairman stated that tho occasion will seVve to mark another milestone in the progress and advancement of Rangiotu and the surrounding district in general. ,MAIN DRAIN. With the prolonged dry spell since the recommencement of widening and deepen-, ing operations on the Mangawbata main drain last January, excellent progress has been made. The pumping station and plant which were installed last November m the vicinity of the Mangawhata cheese factory, have been dismantled owing to the work of deepening having reached and just passed that point. Considerable trouble was experienced during the abnormally wet week prior to last Christmas and just after, causing much broken time and delay. However, with the advent of fine weather since the latter part of January, the - pumping plant has been functioning most excellently, and the gang of about 40 men have not had broken time since. On the other hand, rain is badly heeded by the farming community and farms,, particularly on the higher and lighter country, have long since assumed a parched appearance. Undoubtedly the draining fraternity is benefiting by the dry spell, while the rest of the general com: munity is unfortunately suffering from the want of rain and sufficient moisture.
