GOLF OPENING. (From Our Own Correspondent.). SHANNON,, April 7. The opening of the Shannon Golf Club’s season took place on Saturday in ideal weather and with a large attendance of enthusiastio players, including visitors freftn the Foxton «and Levin Clubs. The secretary, Mr A. H. Morgan, did everything possible to make the afternoon enjoyable, while the afternoon tea dispensed by Mesdames H. Clifford Jones and L. Mark was much appreciated. The links were declared open by the club captain (Mr A. R. Blackwood) in the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr. \V. King. Mr Blackwood extended a hearty welcome to tho visitors • and all new members, expressing the hope that all would have an enjoyable day. At the close of the day Mr Mason (Foxton) and Mr Smaile (Levin) returned thanks for a most enjoyable afternoon and congratulated the club on their links. Mr Mason also mentioned that the Foxton links would be opened next Saturday, when he hoped to see Shannon well represented. Canadian foursomes were played, Mr Morgan and Mr Smaile returning the best card. In a beginners’ competition Mrs Elvines and Mr Elvines were the winners. The club is indeed fortunate in having such excellent links in picturesque surroundings. Some of the holes are exceedingly difficult, but adding interest to the game. It is a nine hole course situated on Messrs Stern Bros’ property, Buckley, and tho gratitude of the players is due to Messrs Stern Bros’ and Mr W. H. McKenzie for the excellent condition of the grounds. BOWLING.
On Saturday afternoon Henry Downes, H. Butt and Quarrie (skip) journeyed to Levin and played the holders of the Kinneburg Feathers, Routley, Langelan, Clements and Suhan (skip) the holders retaining the Feathers by 28 points to 12. At the week-end three rinks from Plimmerton visited Shannon, suffering defeat on tho aggregate by 38 points to 83. The visitors expressed pleasure at the hospitality received and hoped that Shannon would return the visit in the near future. Two rinks will visit Foxton next Wednesday to play friendly games. BUCKLEY DRAINAGE BOARD.
A meeting of the Buckley Drainage Board was held on Saturday. Present: Trustees Law (in the chair), Egginton, Peers, Easton and Speirs. A report tabled by the treasurer showed the position of the various accounts as follow :—General account dr. £25 7s 6d, interest account dr. £75 12s 6d, Buckley sub-division dr. £23 7s lid, deposit account credit £4O, Koputuroa sub-division credit £3O 3s, Koputuroa loan, 1928, credit £361 13s 6d, flood protection improvement account, credit £1592 18s Bd. Accounts totalling £943 17s 9d were passed for payment. Tho engineer in his report on the flood protection improvement work stated that the contractor had completed about 30 • per cent of the work and 40 per cent of the time had elapsed. He was carrying out the work satisfactorily. Tho protection at Easton's was 90 per cent complete, this also being well done. The protection work at Bryant’s would be completed within a few days. The alterations to the doors of tho concrete flood-gate comprising raising the sill two feet and cutting down the doors to suit of the Koputuroa main floodgate, had been finished. . The drainage gates at Koputuroa were being attended to. The main idea at present was to get the heavy work done before the weather breaks, and this work would bo given precedence over tine smaller -jobs of willow planting, fencing, minor protection, etc. - ■ The following contracts were let: Contract No. 5, £lO4 6s;'contract No. 6, £152 16s 3d; contract No. 7, £93 17s Id; cleaning Buckley drain®, 2s Bd, 2s and Is lOd per chain. It was resolved to expend £2O as a start in deepening the Buckley drain. GENERAL. While cranking Jiis car on Friday morning Rev. R. Williamson had the misfortune to break his wrist owing to the car back-firing. • . . Soipe 25 brethren from Empire Lodge, Wellington, visited Shannon on Saturday, returning home on Sunday afternoon. During their stay here they were motored around> the district and shown all local industries of interest. In common with other parts of the Dominion, Shannon is experiencing a spell of dry weather, but the borough water supply is still at normal pressure, 751 be. to the square inch. Surveyors are at work at the Makerua railway station, obtaining data regarding the reconstruction of the main highway.
