RANGITIKEI.

(From Our Own Correspondent). MARTON, March 31.

Misses Cleary, of Palmerston North, are visiting friends in Rangitikei. Mrs F. McMasters is a Marton visitor to Dunedin. Mr and Mrs H. Hewitt, of Marton, are visiting; Wanganui. Miss Marjorie Deighton, of Mangaweka, is visiting Wanganui. Mrs C. Jensen, of Taihapo, who has been visiting the Waitomo Caves and Taranaki, is now tho guest of Mrs H. C. Veitch, Wanganui. Mrs Rainey Jackson, of Turakina Valley, is a visitor to Dunedin. The wedding was solemnised at . St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Wanganui, on Wednesday last, of Ruth Mace, only daughter of Mrs and the late Mr C. W. Galpin, members of a well-known Rangitikei family, and Vawdrey Alexander Brookie. Rev. G. L. King officiated, Mr J. A. Harris gave away the bride and Miss Jessie Coombe was bridesmaid, while Mr Victor Tremewan wa3 best man. Among the guests from Rangitikei were Mesdames J. A. Harris, Morris, Mr and Mrs J. Gibson, Mrs Parkinson, Miss Gibson, Mr and Mrs J. Harvey, Mr and Mrs Lampp. Another wedding of interest to this district was celebrated on Tuesday last at the Ingestre Street Baptist Church, Wanganui, tho parties being Mabel Doris, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. E. Brown, Marton, and Horace Spencer, only son of Mr and Mrs S. F. Reynolds, of Auckland. Rev. Joseph Kemp, assisted by Rov. 11. G. Goring, performed tho ceremony. Mrs J. A. Spurdle, sister of the bride, was matron of honour, ‘and Betty Brown, flower girl. Mr H. E. Tipper aotod as best man. Mr and Mrs A. Ashton, enthusiastic workers for the Presbyterian Church in Ohingaiti, were met by adherents, of the church last week and presented with gifts on the occasion of Mr Ashton’s retirement from active service on behalf of the church. Mrs A. Charles, of Ohingaiti, is an inmate of a Hunterville hospital. Mrs P. Butler and her daughter are Ihe guests of Mr and Mrs B. Illston, Silverhope. Mr and Mrs J. Clarke are Wellington visitors to Huntervillo. Mr and Mrs A. Dalziell and Mr and Mrs W. Smith, of Hunterville, are leaving this week on a trip to Tokaanu. Rt. Hon. J'. G. Coates and Mrs Coates, who are to visit Huntervillo on their way from Taihape to Marton on Friday next, will bo the guests of Mrs A. G. Simpson at lunch and later will visit the bowling green where the Town Board will tender them an official welcome and friends will entertain them to afternoon tea. A well is being sunk in the westorn area cj the Marton Park with a viow to improving the ground which will this season be used for Rugby. . ..... Rain is very badly needed in this district, as elsewhere. The pact three months are likely to prove tho driest on record. A tender of £7 has been accepted for the old pavilion in Marton Park, a structure which in tho early days was a source of pride to the inhabitants. The United Ladies’ Hookey Club,. Marton, held a shop on Saturday and raised a considerable sum of money. Competitions wero won by Mr P. Gould (goose), Miss E. Holder (chocolates) and Miss Meads (cake). Mrs T. Barton was in charge of the offort. . , TT Tho annual meeting of tho Hunterville branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday, Mr J. R. Lloyd Hammond presiding. The balance-sheet disclosed a credit balance of £74 and the membership numbors 104. It was decided to contribute £5 to the funds of the Main Trunk Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs. Mr Hammond was re-elected chairman. Thero wero no cricket matches hero on Saturday on account of the representative team being at Palmerston North in quest of the Hawke Cup. Sportsmen found another diversion in listening in the main street to a broadcast of tho big boxing match at Wellington. At Ohingaiti on Saturday afternoon, a Slverhope B grade tennis team defeated an Ohingaiti team by six sets, 53 games to six sots 52 games. Tho match was one of tho keenest seen in this district for a long time.
