CRIME IN CHICAGO
UNPRECEDENTED SCENE. DUEL IN HOSPITAL. PATIENTS PANIC STRICKEN. (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). Received February 26, 11.20 a.m. NEW YORK, Feb. 25. Advice from Chicago states that an incident of lawlessness, even unprecedented for Chicago, occurred to-day, when three enemies of a local “Beer Baron” burst into a ward of a German hospital, where the “Beer Baron” was lying with a broken leg, and fought a pistol battle with him. Twenty-seven shots were exchanged, and three bullets entered the Beer Baron’s body, but, propped on his elbow, he continued to empty liis revolver at the marauders. The marauders had climbed up the fire escape, and they disappeared the same wsay. The duel threw the hospital, a large institution, into panic, the patients screaming. Many who had been bedridden for weeks leaped out of their cots and ran into the corridors, until they fell with weakness. The “Beer Baron” escaped with his life. It is believed that his assailants were not injured.
