RAILWAY STATION LIGHTS.
new system completed. Work on the two 90-foot tpwers that will bear floodlights to Illuminate the Palmerston North railway station and yards was completed to-day and the lights will be turned on to-night tor the first time. Departmental heads will be present from Wellington and the new system will be submitted to a thorough examination. The tower nearest the Square bears three lights, two of which, shining over the station yards, are each of 2000 candle-power. The other, which faces the Square, is of 1000 candle-power. The strength of the lights will be considerably magnified by a special arrangement of mirror reflectors. The lens of the largest light is two feet in diameter Eour lights have been attached to the tower in the vicinity of Cook Street. The two facing toward the station will each be of 2000 candle-power. The largest of the series, of 3000 candlepower, will illuminate the coal dump section, a smaller light being focussed on the engine sheds. , The lights were linked up yesterday, and on being switched on were found to be working satisfactorily. The final operation of focussing all the lights to give the maximum of illumination will be carried out to-night. The cost of the whole undertaking is stated to be m the viemity of £IOOO.
