SETTLERS AT KARERE.

TRUCKING OF STOCK. REQUEST BY DEPUTATION Seeking the erection of suitable yards for the loading of cattle at Karere, a deputation of the settlers, arranged by Mr J. Linklater, M.P., and Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., waited upon the district railway engineer (Mr Beasley) and the district traffic manager (Mr J. Brown) at the station this morning. The settlers present were Messrs R. D. Knight, H. Voss, D. Rowland, R. Tanner, D. Buchanan, D. B. McEwan and G. Bell.

Mr Linklater, in introducing the deputation, stated that the matter of providing cattle yards at Karere had been before the department for a considerable time, and the breeders of the district had been met to some extent by the erection of sheep yards. He pointed out that Mr R. D'. Knight was closely concerned and anxious to give his business to the railways. He had paid £216 in freights last year. The settlers wanted a loading ramp for horses and cattle. The facilities asked for would not involve the department in heavy expense. Mr Knight stated that the Foxton train would not shunt to pick up stock at Longburn, owing to the express following close behind. Mr Buchanan said that breeders handling stock at present took the animals to Longburn and accepted “pot-luck.” He used his own race at Tiakitahuna for loading up. • Mr Bell-stated that-some breeders would not enter for shows owing to the work involved and the transport difficulties through inadequate facihMr Voss spoke in support of the erection of the vards. as did Mr McMr Brown stated that a yard would have to be provided both for horses and cattle. . c Mr Tanner said that the erection ot the sheep yards had been a great convenience. , ~ , „„„ Mr Buchanan stated that on one morning in the past he had seen fifteen truck loads of stud stock leave the Karere station.
