BOY SCOUTS. (Front Our Own Correspondent). SHANNON, Feb. 25. A meeting of the Boy Scouts Committee was held on Monday evening. His Worship the Mayor (Mr E. Butt) presiding. The scountmaster, Mr P. Bass, reported that the troop recommenced activities on the 10th inst., when the first parade of tho year was held. Owing to the hall used last year not being available, the use of the Parish Hall had been obtained. Last Monday the boys were taken to the domain for outside work. Patrol-leader Telfer had left the district. Tho scoutmaster suggested that the installation ceremony should be held as soon as possible and also acknowledged with thanks the receipt of his warrant, with promotion to scoutmaster duly endorsed thereon. The active membership of the scouts is 13. It was resolved to endeavour to arrange the installation for next Monday night, when Commissioner Dredge, of Palmerston North, is to he invited to be present. Invitations to be present will also be extended to the Girl Guides and their committee and to the general public. It is hoped to enlist the services of a competent person to give instruction in first aid as soon as possible. The treasurer reported the credit balance in hand to be £4 10s lOd. The Croquet Club’s drawings for the silver cup presented by the Mayoress (Mrs E. Butt) and for trophies presented by Mcsdames C. Cronqucst and J. T. Bovis (president) are now out, and play is already in progress. Some evenly contested games should eventuate and members are making every effort to get their matches off as quickly as possible. Play for the silver cup, which is for all players below 10 bisques, will be on tho two life system, while Mrs Cronquest’s trophy is open for all members of the club on handicap play, The third trophy is for handicap doubles. The local school picnic hold at Plimmerton on Saturday was favoured with an ideal day, a large number of children and adults making the trip. All arrangements were well carried oub by hardworking committee members and teachors. During tho afternoon a small programme of 6ports was carried out on the beach, all events being keenly contested. The school observed Monday as a holiday. Next Saturday Shannon will send two rinks of bowlers to Levin to participate in the Manawatu Centre games. Mrs E. Dickoff has been compelled to enter a Palmerston North private hospital to undergo an operation. Mra 11. Knowles left on Saturday for Plimmcrton, where she will spend some weeks with her sister.
