RONGOTEA.

TENNIS. (From Our Own Correspondent). RONGOTEA, Feb. 24. On Saturday afternoon the Rongotea tennis team were defeated by the Rangiotu Club on the Rangiotu courts by a small margin, Rangiotu gaining five sets and 54 games as against four sets and 49 games by Rongotea. .-.Owing to illness, and several players being unavailable, no lady members were included in the team, and this took a little interest from the match. After all the games were completed, Mr M. Saywell, captain of the Rangiotu Club, on behalf of the members thanked the Rongotea Club for their attendance and said that, although they had been defeated by a small margin, they were by no means disgraced. Ho also thanked the ladies for the exoellent afternoon tea which'was served to the play, ers. Mr K. Tunnicliffe, captain of the Rongotea team, in reply, thanked Mr Saywell for his remarks, and hoped that in the near future another match could bo arranged, as each team had obtained a win out of tho two matches played. Cheers for the opponents were given by each team. The following are the results of the games, Rangiotu players being mentioned first: Men’s Singles.—Walker lost to Fenwick 67, Larkins beat Tunnicliffe 7—5, Saywell lost to Liggins 6 —7, Board lost to Buchanan 5 —7, Shaw beat Richfield 7 —3, Chapman beat Tunnicliffe 7 —2. Men’s ' doubles.—Larkins and Walker lost to Fenwick and Tunnicliffe 2 —7, Beard and Saywell beat Liggins and Buchanan 7 Shaw and Chapman beat Richfield and Tunnicliffe 7 —5, SCHOOL SPORTS. A team of athletes from tho Rongotea School particpated in the Bunnythorpe Bports on Saturday afternoon, and were again, successful in gaining the Faulkner Gup for the team scoring most points in the running and jumping section, open to primary. schools. The . team, which was made up rfom the- following pupils, is to bo congratulated upon the success obtained : —Girls, Stella Duke and Mary Botcher; boys, Fred Moore and Lester Major. In the girls’ section Stella Duke gained 6econcT place in the 100 yards for girls under 15 years, while May -Bottcher succeeded in winning the 75 yards for girls under 12 years. • For the boysi Fred Moore breasted the tape -first ■in the 100 yards under 15 years, and also succeeded in winning the long jump under 15 years. Lester Major gained second place in th§ 100 yards under 12 years and third place in the long jump under 15 years. In tho j relay race the Rongotea team was beaten into second place.
