DUNEDIN CITY ORGANIST.

AFPOINTMENT CAUSES ! SURPRISE. DUNEDIN, Dec. 20. The .City Council on Wednesday night appointed Mr Paget Gale as city organist,. the decision being reached, by a narrow margin of six votes to five. Tire appointment occasioned a good deal of surprise, and already an emphatic public protest has been voiced by the members of the Advisory Committee which was set up in connection with the matter, and which includes tho donor of the organ. It is pointed out by the Advisory Committee that it recommended the appointment of Dr. V. E. Galway, or, failing him, one of the two Melbourne applicants for the position, and that this recommendation has been virtually ignored. The committee strongly criticises the action of the council, and there is no .doubt that a very strong body of opinion supports that criticism. A member of the City Council has already lodged a notice of motion moving for the rescission of the resolution by which Mr Gale was appointed.

Dr. Galway, who has adjudicated for the Manawatu Competitions Society. will attend the Musicians’ Conference at Palmerston North next month.. During his stay in town Dr Galway will give a recital at All Saints’ Church.
