MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
John Davis, a butcher, aged 32 years, appeared, before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, this morning, charged with being idle and disorderly and with having no lawful visible means of support. He was represented by Mr Merton. Counsel stated that Davis was working all the winter, and came into Palmerston North with a cheque a few days ago, but bad spent it all. He had work to go to at a freezing works in a week’s time and lodgings would be provided for him in the meantime. “Unfortunately, this man is as untruthful as it is possible to get one,” said Senior-Sergeant Whitehouse. “When be was accosted by the police he said that he had paid £3 for board at an hotel, but had paid only. 9s and owed the balance. He has no previous convictions, but has been accosting people and asking for money.” Answering the Magistrate, the senior-sergeant said that be had not ascertained if Davis had work in view. His Worship remanded Davis for sentence until Saturday. In the meantime, inquiries are to be made to ascertain if his statement that has work to go to is correct. “We don’t want him loose during Show week,” added the Magistrate. SECOND OFFENCE. Edward Stephen McAnulty, a labourer, 68 years of age, was convicted and fined 10s for his second offence in beThg found drunk in the Square yesterday.
