CENTRAL SCHOOL.

Mr W. R. Mayes presided over the monthly meeting of the Central School Committee last evening. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. J. A. Grant, E. V. Spear and W. Patten.

The headmaster, Mr E. Bary, reported as follows:—“The attendance naa been very good, the average being 799, while the roll is 839. Our best 'attendance this year ,is 815. It has been found necessary to close the roll of the infant department and create a waiting list. Miss Toomath has- returned to duty after three weeks’ absence. Miss Emmett completed her term on October 31 and her position is temporarily filled by Mrs C. Pulford until Miss E. Lumsden takes up her position at the beginning of December. A suitable time-table has been prepared for swimming instruction and this work will be conducted in the near future. During the month Dr. Gunn examined the children for the health camp but, owing to the death of Mr B. P. Lethbridge, the camp for this year has been abandoned. Miss Mac Murray, assistant supervisor of special classes, has also visited the school and examined children for the establishment of a special class for retardate pupils. I should like the committee to consider planting trees and flowering shrubs along the front fence. The staff is contemplating a concert in the assembly hall to raise funds for laying down the asphalt basketball and playing area. The annual examinations are being conducted at present. It would be pleasing to hear that our application for a subsidy for the reference library has been approved. To enable sports material to be procured the children gave an afternoon concert this week and raised £8 8s for this purpose.” It was decided to consult Mr Lange, agricultural instructor, as to the planting of shrubs along the front fence. The secretary was instructed to again write to the Wanganui Education Board asking for the subsidy for the reference library. It was decided to ask the board to sanction for subsidy purposes the construction of seating round the infant block. • . ’ The Salvation Army Life Saving Girl Guides wrote stating that they would be holding a camp at the Showgrounds during the Christmas vacation and asking for the use of the school baths on December 28, 30 and 31 and January 2 in the mornings. The request was granted, no charge to be made and the time limit to be an hour and a half. Official intimation was received that the resignation of the infant mistress, Miss Govan, would take effect from January 3.
