{From Our Own Correspondent.) AIARTON, Oct. 11. The funds of St. David’s Presbyterian Church, Taihape, were considerably augmented by the proceeds of a sale of work held on Wednesday afternoon. Numerous stalls did brisk business. The organisation of the function was in the hands of the Ladies’ Guild.
The Marton Bowling Club committee last evening appointed Messrs F. Connell, J. Shine and A. Way a selection committee and Air M. N. Atkinson handicapper. Alessrs F. Purnell and W. H. Brown have donated prizes for the first two competitions" of the season. Air G. R. Simpson has accepted the position of representative on the Wanganui Centre. Several new members have been obtained. In consequence of a letter received from the Education Board stating that the secondary department will be closed at the end of the present year unless written guarantees are obtained that not less than 20 pupils will attend next year, the Hunterville School Committee has decided to canvass the district for pupils. There is no abatement of the welter of controversy regarding the site of the proposed jubilee grandstand in Marton Park, and opinion is 60 divided that, no matter what site is eventually chosen, there will be a large number of dissatisfied subscribers to the scheme.
The Aloawhango Cricket Club, the cradle of several successful players, held its annual meeting this week, when the following officials were chosen to do duty for the ensuing year:—Patron, Mf R. W. Smith; president. Air A. O. P. Bailey; vice-presi-dents, Alessrs F. R. Cottrell. C. B. Heatley, B. W. Ensor, H. S. Shepherd. J. Logan, J. Ford, A. Neil; captain, Mr J. Whittle; vice-captain, Air G. B. Chrystail; secretary and treasurer, Air E. Lord. Sunday “home and home’’ fixtures are to be arranged as that day is the only suitable one for most of the country players. The clearing away of several large trees in the centre of Lower Follett Street, Alarton, has greatly facilitated the movements of traffic on busy days. The trees were onco the pride of the committee responsible for their planting (in the memory of past mayors of the town) but nowadays nobody seems to know whom the individuals were, and few cared about the purpose of the “monuments.” A movement is on foot to erect a memorial in St. Stephen’s Church, Alarton, to the late Mr Arthur Horsfall Bill, who for many years acted as a warden and lay reader. , The cricket soason officially opens in Rangitikei next Wednesday. PERSONAL. Air James Bull, of Hunterville, has returned from the Auckland races. Air Charles Edward Luxford, a well-known Wellington business man, who died on Wednesday at the age of 75 years, was the father of Airs S. J. Gibbons, of Alarton. Air R. C. H. Richardson, 8.E., son of Air Air. and Airs H. H. Richardson, of Alarton, and holder of a travelling scholarship of Canterbury College, has been appointed third assistant to the district electrical engineer for the Aletropolitan Vickers Company at Glasgow. Air Richardson was formerly on the firm’s Alanchester head office staff.
