MASSEY COLLEGE.

ERECTION OF BUILDINGS. EXCELLENT PROGRESS MADE. Favourable weather conditions and th© use of the most modern building methods have enabled rapid progress, to be made with the erection of tfie refectory and science blocks at the . Massey Agricultural College, and a “Standard” representative, who visited the McHardy property this morning, was informed by the representative of the contractors that the work was going ahead in an excellent‘manner. Seventysix men were now engaged, and the number would pTobably be. increased to about 120 in a fortnight. Tons of building material and machinery, have arrived, apd the preliminary work in connection with the foundations is being pushed through. Excavation to a depth, of eleven feet, at the site of the science block, involving the removal of about 4000 cubic yards of spoil, has been practically completed, the weather having, been very favourable to such operations. Mad© in the contracting firm’s own factory at Auckland, the machinery and equipment being used embodies all the latest improvements in building methods. Two large cemept chutes 130 feet high have been erected and the larger has a capacity of 180 cubic yards of concrete in eight hours. An automatic electric pumping plant capable of producing 2000 gallons an hour has been installed to pump water from the Tiritea Stream 150 feet below. Mechanical devices which can be operated with the minimum delay are being employed in the building operations. The latest steel bending and cutting machines have arrived, together with circular and band saws, while an electric hand saw is a valuable adjunct. The refectory block, which must be completed by March next, is in a more advanced stage than the science block, the contract time for the latter being two years. • • •.
