(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Sept. 5. Mr and Mrs A. C. Baker, of Palmerston North, aro at present spending a holiday with Mrs Baker, of Union Street. Nurse At. Barber, of Auckland, is at present spending a holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs W. E. Barber, of Motuiti.

The many Foxton friends of Mr W. Renton will regret to learn of the severe accident ho received at Rangiotu yesterday. Mr W. E. Barber, of Foxton, accompanied by his daughter, Nurec Mr Barber, happened on the scene shortly afterwards and Miss Barber was able to carry out first aid before Mr Renton was removed to a private hospital in Palmerston North. At the local police station, before Mr J. K. Hornblow, J.P.. Clarenco Wilfred Coley was charged tnat, on August 31st, ho was found drunk while in charge of a motor car in Cook Street. Accused, who had been released on bail, did not appear. In evidence, Constable Owen stated, that in company with Constable Bell, at 10.40 p.m. on Saturday, he saw a motor ear in Cook Street. On making investigations he discovered defendant sitting at the wheel of tho car asleep. He was moved over and the car driven to tho police station, but he was in a hopeless state of intoxication and did not even wake up. He was released on bail the following morning ill a surety of £25, a quarter of the penalty to which ho was liable. This was defendant’s first offence. He did not have a driver’s license, but would be charged with that offence at tho next sitting of the Alagistrate’s Court. Accused was convicted and fined £5, in default seven days’ imprisonment.

The vital statistics for Foxton for the month of August, with the figures for tho same period last year in parentheses, are as follow:—Births, 5 (7); deaths, nil (2); marriages, nil (4). Alaons: Births, 2 (nil); deaths, nil (2). . During the month of August rain fell on seven days locally, a total of 1.88 inches being recorded. Foxton called in with a full cargo from Lyttelton yesterday and after discharging departed for Wellington on the evening tide. It is many years since there has been such activity at the port. The harbour shed is kept well filled and a number of men are finding employment on the waterfront.

The whitebait have not yet commenced to run in any quantity in the Alanawatu and catches to date‘have been very small. It is anticipated that they will appear in the river in large quantities before long. Continual freshes in the river have had the effect of keeping them away. Dog poisoning has again been rife lately in Foxton. During last week another eight dogs were accounted for. In all about one hundred dogs must have been killed since poisoning first commenced The police have the matter in hand.
