AL JOLSON IN “THE JAZZ SINGER.’’

A 1 Jolson stars in “The Singer” which commenced a four nights’ season, last evening, at the Palace Theatre. The long-awaited presentation of the picturisatton of Samson Raphaelson’s comedy-drama, which continues to be a potent attraction on the legitimate stage, was attended by a large “house.” Ot the production of “ The Jazz Singer ” it is said that Warner Bros, have lavished so much thought, care and attention that they look upon the completed work as their supremo achievement. For nearly six months tho picture was in active preparation. The story of the rise of the son of the cantor who deserted his home to. become a jazz singer and at last was torn between the dcsiro of his father that he succeed hijn in the synagoguo and his own desire to shine on Broadway is well known. Alan Crosland, who directed the picture, is said to have • treated tho story in the spirit in which it was conceived. That Jolson is the logical exponent of the story of the picture is clear from the fact that the story of his own life parallels it in many places. Chief in Jolson’s support is May McAvoy as leading woman in the role of Mary Dale. Warner Gland has tho role of tho elderly cantor. Among others in the numerous cast are Otto Lcdorer, Eugenio Besscrer, Cantor Josef Rosenblatt, Anders Randolf, William Dcmarcst, Bobby Gordon, Richard Tucker and Nat Carr.

KOSY THEATRE. KEN MAYNARD AND BUCK JONES. Another splcnddi programme will bo screened at tlie Rosy to-night, headed by everybody’s favourite, Ken Maynard, in a thrilling and exciting story ot the rodeo, entitled “Cheyenne.” Some wonderful scenes of tho cowboys at play, and views of the great rodeo are clearly shown. “Cheyenne” is a story of the round-up and prize rodeos with the famous Frontier Days open air show of Cheyenne. Wyoming, as the background for the entire picture. To bo recognised as the champion of the Cheyenne Show is praise indeed. The greatest riders, ropers and daredevil stunters aro to be seen in the motion picture version of “Cheyenne,” for the show was photographed in all its glory. There are twenty thousand people from all over the United States in the grandstand at all times. They lent themselves to the spirit of the occasion and became motion picture actors for tho length of time necessary. Also showing is Buck Jones in an aviation picture entitled “Tho Big Hop.” This artist has not been seen for a long time, and he again makes a welcome return to the screen in this thrilling drama of the sky. This' is Buck’s first aviation picture and it is a great success. THEATRE DE LUXE. ANOTHER LON CHANEY TRIUMPH. “While the City Sleeps,” Lon Chancy’s latest contribution to tho screen, which opens at the Theatre de Luxo, to-night, will startle even those Chaney fans who aro accustomed to almost any surprise in the work of tho “man of a thousand faces.” Chaney plays a detective in a desperate struggle with a band of gangsters in the new picture. A sensational machine gun battle between police and gangsters, a running battle on the roofs of a city and other thrills, intimate details of police operations and methods, and a pretty romance aro features mf this vivid drama. The cast includes Mfio Busch, Wheeler Oakman and Carroll Nyo. Anita Page, heroine of “Tolling the World,” is seen in the principal feminine role.
