LADIES’ HOCKEY.
SOUTH AFRICAN TEAM SELECTORS. Considering that there is a preponderance of South Island representation on the committee to select a New Zealand ladies’ hockey team to take part in the Empire tournament in South Africa nex't year, the Manawatu Ladies’ Hockey Association has forwarded a protest to the New Zealand Association. The selectors originally appointed were Messrs H. Throp (Canterbury), J. Martyn (Ocago), R. Thompson (Wanganui), Mrs DobsOn (Rualiine) and Miss Kitto (New Zealand Association). Mr Thompson, however, resigned from the committee and Mr R. Surgenor, of Southland, was appointed ill his stead. This gave the South Island three representatives and the North Island only one, while there are about twice as many associations ua the North Island as in the South. A meeting of the executive of the Manawatu Association was held during the week-end and it was decided to send the following telegram to the New Zealand Association : “Manawatu emphatically protests against the replacement on tire New Zealand selection committee of a North Island man by a South Island man, making the South Island three to North Island one.”
