EMPANELLING A JURY.
NUMEROUS CHALLENGES. TWENTY-NINE NAMES DRAWN. The empanelling of a jury in tho Supremo Court at New Plymouth last week to try a case in which three persons were jointly charged caused the registrar some ooncern as to whether ho had enough jurymen to see the matter through. The upper row of half a dozen was filled without difficulty, no objection being taken by either tho Crown solicitor or counsel for the accused to the first six names drawn from the ballot box. Then tho trouble began, and it was found necessary to draw 29 names in. all before the panel of 12 was filled. When the seventh name was announced, the owner was challenged, and interest in the body of the Court quickened as 12 failures were recorded one after another. Eight of them were challenged and four were ordered by the Crown to stand by. After that the average was better, five failures being recorded out of the last 11 names drawn. Six challenges is the maximum, allowed for one accused, so having exhausted his prerogative on behalf of one of the accused, counsel proceeded to run. tho length of the gamut on behalf of number two. Of the 29 names drawn 11 were challenged and six came under the ‘ stand by” veto.
