LAWN TENNIS. (Australian Press Association. —United Service.) NEW YORK, Aug. 24. At Forest Hills, Miss Helen Wills won the National Women’s championship, beating Mrs Watson (England), 6 —4, 6—2. Mrs Watson stubbornly contested every point of tho first set, getting every inch of length in her shots and holding on m tho raliles. She led 3—2 and was often outplaying Miss Wills, but speed and accuracy overcame tho Englishwoman, who tired rapidly. Mrs Watson in the second set was ablo to secure the third game after repeated doucing and won tho seventh at 15—40,' but Miss Wills was not to bo denied. Tho gallery barracked for-Mrs Watson and chocrcd loudly her valiant but ineffective battle. In tho doubles semi-final, which was stopped on Friday on account of rain, Mrs Michell and Mrs Watson beat Miss Betty Nuthall and Miss Helen Jacobs, 9—ll, 6—3, 6 —4. In tho final Mrs Watson and Mrs Michell beat Mrs Shepherd-Barron and Mrs Coveil, 2 —6, 6 —3, 6—4. Mrs Watson and Mrs ichel lagain demonstrated the superiority of English women’s doubles play by boating Miss Helen Jacobs and Miss Betty Nuthall. Mrs Watson then played her hard match with Miss Wills, and shortly after appeared with Mrs Michell for tho final doubles against Miss Covel land Mrs. Shepherd-Barron. At Stamford Park to-day, Germany defeated England -by eight events to four in the first Anglo-German athletic contest since the war. Lord Burghley and Peltzer participated.
