TONSIL OPERATION. (Australian Press Association.) HONOLULU, Aug. 23. The Surgical Conference adopted resolutions to form a permanent organisation for the Pacific area, with headquarters at Honolulu, meeting there every three years and including a section on hospital standardisation. The delegates agreed that the conference was an outstanding success, and were sure that a permanent organisation of this type would contribute to a better understanding between the nations. Dr Francis emphasised the importance of examining the tonsils even .when surface indications of infection were absent. He said that all patients Buffering symptoms even remotely attributable to toxic absorption should have a careful nasopharyngeal investigation. He was opposed to the popular belief that tonsils should be removed in middle ago and also denied that a tonsil operation was likely to injure singers’ voices. Many of his patients had had beneficial results. Dr Francis urged surgeons to consider tonsilotomy a major operation requiring a general anaethetic whever possible.
