NAVAL LIMITATION.
PRIME MINISTER’S MISSION. (Australian Press Association.) Received August 23, 1.25 p.m. WASHINGTON, Aug. 22. The British Embassy has issued a statement, to tho effect that Miss Ishbel MacDonald will accompany the Prime Minister on his visit to tho United States. Apparently, Miss Macdonald’s presence is partially to emphasise the informality of the trip. It is reported that Mr MacDonald’s visit in October will cause tlie postponement of the visit of a British warship to Washington, but soon after the Prime Minister departs the fiagship Despatch will pay a courtesy call. AUSTRALIAN NAVY. DRASTIC ECONOMIES. Received August 23, 11 a.m. CANBERRA, Aug. 23. Drastic economies involving the reduction of the naval personnel by over 600, the sale of four destroyers and the paying off of other vessels was announced by tho Federal Treasurer, Dr. Earl Page, to-day. The expenditure on defence will be over £500,000 less than last year.
