PAHIATUA.
(From Our Own orrespondent). , PAHIATUA, Aug. 24. On Thursday night the local branch of the Plunket Society held its annual ball, the Drill Hall being thronged with an unusually large assemblage which included a number of visitors from other districts. The hall had been most tastefully decorated for the occasion under the capable direction of Mr J. T. Smith. The music was supplied by a Palmerston North orchestra who generously responded to the repeated encores. Extras were rendered by Miss Dulcie Jones, Messrs G. Hoggard, J. Cornford and W. Larkin. Mr J. Shekloton made an efficient M.U. The supper arrangements were under tho expert charge of Airs A. East. The secretaries AXesdames AV. H. Purdie and J. T. Kotlowski, and the energetic committee who assisted them are to be congratulated on a capably organised and highly successful function. Among the many ladies present were : —Mesdames J. D. Wikon, A. On Wednesday evening, a very pleasant gathering took place in the Mnngamutu Hall, when Mr and Airs Frank Pederson, who are moving to Ngaire, Stratford, were farewelled. Air Pederson has been the manager ef the Pahiatua Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., for 11 years. Dancing was indulged in, tho music for which was supplied by Miss Mae Collins, Alessrs H. Burt, R. Merrie, R. Turnbull and G. AVade. Messrs J. O’Brien and G. Lawton were the Al.C.’s. Air D. O’Brien, who presided, presented Air and Airs Pederson with a handsome chiming clock, while Mr D. Kelly, on behalf of the Bush Factory Alanagers’ Association, presented Air Pederson with a handsome rug and suitcase from his fellow factory managers, referring at the same time to the excellent work Air Pederson had carried out as secretary to the association. Air J. D. Aloncrieff, president of the Alangainutu Rifle Club, in presenting Alaster Bert Pederson with a set of military hair brushes, said that Alessrs Pederson and T. O’Dea had been responsible for the formation of the club and it was entirely duo to their efforts that the season just closed had been so successful. Mr Brechin also spoke a few words of appreciation and farewell. Air Pederson returned thanks in suitable terms. . A combined Bible Class social gathering was held in the Foresters’ Hall on Wednesday evening. In spite of tho inclement weather there was a good attendance, there being present a large number of visitors from AVoodville, Palmerston North, Ashhurst, Alangamairo and Alakomako were also represented. Among those who contributed items were Alosdarries C. Jones (Palmerston North) and Withers, Alisscs Ebbett, Day (Alakomako) and E. McQueen, and Alessrs Stratford, J. Grubb, Peter Withers, J. Payne and Ralph Patchett. The winners of the competitions were Aliss Ebbett and Mr R. J. Collister.
