THE BARQUE EUTERPE.
TRACING ITS HISTORY. HANDS ACROSS THE SEA. An indication of the steps being taken to trace the history of the old barque Euterpe, on which a number of Manawatu settlers made the voyage to New Zealand, is given in the San Diego Union newspaper of April 6, comment being contained in its columns on the matter.
“Efforts of the Zoological Society of San Diego to line up the early history of the old barque, Star of India, presented by James W. Coffroth for use as a maritime museum, have gone far and wide, and the latest assistance comes from far away New Zealand,” states the San Diego Union. “The Star of India, formerly the British ship Euterpe, traded from England to New Zealand many years ago, and a number of her passengers settled around Palmerston North, New Zealand. The publishers of the ‘Manawatp Evening Standard’ of that city, a copy of which arrived here yesterday, have . printed an article about the old ship, and are appealing to their subscribers to aid in gathering the data required.”
