COLLEGE STREET SCHOOL.

MONTHLY COMMITTEE MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the College Street School Committee was held last evening, Mr W. It. Taylor presiding. Also present were Messrs It. Edwards, C. S. Pees, B. F. Barldw, H. A. Hamilton, W. F. Cutler, F. Tucker, C. Turnbull and P. W. Barnard.

The headmaster, Mr W. A. Swinbourn, reported as follows:—“The Toll is 528 and the average attendance last week was 471. Chicken-pox has to a considerable extent affected the attendance, but apart from that the roll is about 40 and the attendance over 50 below normal. This is a serious matter as, if this state of affairs continues, a reduction in the staff will result. Miss Williamson took up her duties as senior woman assistant on May 27. Miss Laurenson, probationer, and Miss Tily, probationary assistant, have been absent on leave for a few days. The ‘bungalow’ stoves have been thoroughly cleaned and, though not so troublesome as formerly, are still not satisfactory. The Winter Show commences next week and I would recommend half day holidays on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. An additional proficiency examination was held on’ May 31, five pupils gaining proficiency certificates. Mr W. L. Fitzherbert, president of the Lite Saving Society, presented a number of certificates to pupils who had won them during the year. Ten of these had become entitled to a year’s free use of the Municipal Baths. Last week Miss Baker, dental nurse, inspected children for further treatment.” The secretary was instructed to write to the Wanganui Education Board, drawing attention to the urgency or replacing the stoves in the “bungalow.” The Minister for Education, Hon. H. Atmorc, advised that he would endeavour to visit the school as. early as possible following the reopening of the schools.
