EARNINGS OF RAILWAYS.

FIRST RETURN OF NEW YEAR,

EFFECT OF EASTER TRAFFIC.

WELLINGTON, June 9,

A working profit of £107,366 is shown by the Railway Department’s working account for the first four weeks, ended April 27, of the new financial year. Tho corresponding period last year gave a working profit of £130,221, but it included an Easter season, whereas this year all the passenger hookings at excursion rates were made in the last week of March. The gross earnings were £618,417 and tho expenses wore £511,051. The former shows a decline of £24,486 and the latter one of only £1530. The disproportion is no doubt partly due to the expense of additional trains for return traffic on tickets purchased in the previous period. The working profit in tho North Island was £45,253, a reduction _ of £26,000; that in the South Island £41,986, an increase of £7214, while net miscellaneous revenue also declined by £4OOO to £20,126.
