MONTHLY BOARD MEETING. At tlic monthly meeting of the Y.M.C.A. Board of Directors, held last evening, there were present: —Messrs. D. T. Allan (chairman), J. A. Grant, j J. Selwyn, J. C. Young, S. Kingston, j F. R. B. Chin, It. C. Donald, J. H. Dick. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. T. It. Hodder, I. Gerrand, J. Wallace, C. E. Histed and A. Hopwood. Tho general secretary, in his report, stated that the activities of the association continued to make tho building busy during the afternoons and evenings. “At this time of the year every department is in full swing with its programme running smoothly. More and more the, organisation and the carrying out of work have been taken by enthusiastic bands of members. This spirit of sorvico is certainly one of tho finest expressions of association life. The several committees responsible for tho organisation of activities are now up to full strength and will meet monthly in future. The first meeting under the control of tho religious and educational committee will bo known as a pleasant Sunday afternoon service. Mr J. Wallace will bo tho chairman and Mr D. T. Allan the speaker, taking as his subject “Science and Religion.” Mr J. A. Grant met a sub-committee from the Optimists’ Club to arrange details for a debate, the subject to be taken for and against being the question of a national halfholiday. Mr A. D. Campbell will tako the affirmative, Mr J. A. Grant the negative. The educational committee feel that there is a definito need for a strong debating club in Palmerston North and looks forward to the cooperation of both members and nonmembers. It is the intention of the committee to hold regular debates fortnightly.” The physical department in its report stated that the activities w.ero being well maintained. “Tho attendances at all classes totals for tho past two months 3353, an increase of 637 over the corresponding period for 1928. It is pleasing to report an increased membership in the business men’s clasSi which has 31 active as against 17 last year. This group is most keen and enthusiastic and its members are undoubtedly reaping direct results, beneficial to both health and vitality and, at the same time, getting a good deal of fun in the process. The enrolments in the various classes are as follow: —Business men, 31q seniors, 61: ladies, 84; girls, 86; boys, 184. — Total, 446.” In connection with the ' boys’ department, tho outstanding event to date was the mother and son banquet. This was certainly the most successful banquet yet held under the auspices of the boys’ department. There were over 300 seated at tho tables, compared with 260 last year. Mrs G. T. Brown was the speaker and tho thanks of the association are due to her for tho very fine address delivered. Inter alia, the report stated that the nine clubs within the boys’ department were functioning well under their leaders. Tho boys were finding the studies set for them from “The World Study of Jesus Christ” both helpful and interesting. The primary school boys’ group intended holding a special

“pul night” when every boy would bring along at least one friend to participate in a full night’s programme. A vote of thanks was passed to F. Needliam, Ltd., for making and erecting free of cost a glass partition dividing the buffet from the office.
