SANDON
TE KAWAU RUGBY SUB-UNION.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) SANDON, June 4. The senior football game, Awahuri v. Hui Mai, played at Sanson last Saturday was a very even contest and the score, three all, just about represents the run of play. A pleasing feature was the good spirit in which the game was player. The may for a time was fairly even, and Awahuri hopes were raised when Wiggins secured from a line-out near the blue line and got over for a try. The kick failed. Even play followed, and then fnom a scrum Tattle sent the ball out-, hut O’Shea spoiled the movement by hanging on. From another scrum Tattlo sent the ball well out to May, who passed on to Taylor, for the latter to score a good try at the corner. No goal resulted. Half-time was called soon after. The second spell opened with play up and down, Awahuri pressing for a time, but the defence held. The blue backs were set going by Tattle several times, but faulty handling and hanging on spoiled scoring chances. Wiggins (Awahuri) had a shot at goal from a penalty; the kick was a good one, but the direction was mot quite true. A similar attempt by Edwards (Hui Mai) did not increase the score. At tho close of the game Awahuri were opening up the play, but could not get over, the game ending all square. Mr S. Reeve capably controlled the game, game For the visitors tho full-back played a safo game. Hooper at wing did not have many chances, but was always safe. K. Drummond put in a lot of work, but was inclined to hang on. Of the forwards the pick were Wiggins and McDonald. For the home team Tattle at half was perhaps tho hardest worked man on the field. D. Cameron at wing-forward was troubling tho opponents. May and Ingram at three-quar-ters wero safe, but O’Shea spoiled good work by hanging on. The forwards all worked well.
Previous to commencing the game Mr 11. J. Fagan had the players lined up and stated that a member of tho Hui Mai Club had suffered a bereavement during tho week in the loss of his mother and asked that a minuto’s silence bo observed as a mark of respect. I’he Hui Mai team also wore black arm bands. ANNUAL SEVEN-ASIDE.
