PAHIATUA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PAHIATUA, June 4.

A slight earthquako was experienced in Pahiatua at about 8.30 o’clock on Sunday morning. The tennis ball —the first ball of the year —which took place on Friday night last was a highly successful function. An energetic committee had left little undone oy way of preparation. Although light rain tell during the evening, the surrounding district was well represented. Visitors were present from Dannevirke, Palmerston North, Woodville, Eketahuna, Masterton and Marton. The floor was in perfect order and the music of the orchestra was much appreciated. Extras were contributed oy Mr Stewart Austin. I’he success of the function was in no small measure due to the energetic secretaries, Messrs D. R. Richards and J. H. McSherry, who con.rolled the arrangements so capably. At tho annual meeting of the Carnival Park Domain Board there were present Messrs A. Rioss (chairman), T. C. Cornford, J. D. Wilson, G. Harold Smith and S. Bolton. The financial position of the board was considered satisfactory, but tho erection of tho caretaker’s residence, and the improvement of the footpaths were deterred until next year when a second poll of ratepayers will be taken for the purpose of striking a special rate. Mr A. Ross and Mr J. A. Walsh were elected chairman and secretary respectively. On Friday evening of this week a party of debaters from Pahiatua District High School will (visit Woodville to debate against a team selected from District High School pupls of that town. Saturday football results were as follows: —Senior: Athletic 0 v. Konini 0; Eketahuna 10 v. Hamua 28. Junior: Newman 6 v. Rongomai 0. Mr J. H. Dashwpod, clerk of the Court at Pahiatua, has been appointed to a similar position at Marton. Mr and Mrs A. D. Donald, Mr and Mrs C. Bee (Pori) and Mrs J. F. Redpath (Wanganui) will leave next Thursday for a month’s holiday in Sydney. Mr Frank Chatwin, of Wellington, is visiting Pahiatua. Miss Mary Swainson, Marton, is tho guest of Mrs J. G. Swainson, Wakeman Street.
