CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I was pleased to see a letter in yesterday’s “Standard” by “Visitor” on the subject of the Opera House. Although there is an emergency exit on eacli side, there is no doubt these would be quite inadequate in case of a severe earthquake such as we had last week or if a fire occurred. Even if these doors were opened without much delay, all the people in the centre of the theatre would have to make their way along the narrow passage in front of the orchestra and from there to the side doors. There should, of course, be a wide passage down the middle of the theatre leading to big doors at the back. Instead of that the centro passage stops at the back of the stalls, so would be quite useless as a means of exit. The Opera House management committee appear to think it is of more importance to provide extra seating accommodation than easy and sufficient exits. It is to be hoped that they will" not discover*their mistake by means of .a disaster such as might have occurred last Tuesday night.—l am, etc., RESIDENT. Palmerston North, May 15. 1929.
