FELLOWSHIPS AWARDED.

SUCCESSFUL NEW ZEALANDERS. (Australian Press Association.) LONDON, May 14. , Fellowships for two years in American Universities under the Commonwealth Fund of New York have been awarded Messrs M. L. Barak and It. M. Campbell, of New Zealand. Mr Barak, New Zealand Rhodes scholar at Oxford, goes to Princeton University with a fellowship in physioal chemistry. Mr Campbell, late of Victoria University College. Wellington, is awarded a law fellowship open to Government servants.

Mr M. Barak, who was born in 1904, was educated at the area School, at the New Plymouth High School, and at Canterbury College. lie was a dux, and gained a junior national scholarship and a senior national scholarship. In his first year (1922) at Canterbury' College he passed the first section of his B.Sc., which he completed in 1924. In that- year he also won the Sir George Grey scholarship. In 1925 he was president of the College Students Association, and chairman of the New Zealand University Tournament Committee. In 1925 he and Mr C. E. Low, 8.A., both of Canterbury College, were awarded Rhodes scholarships. Mr R. M. Campbell was born at Maungatapere, in the North Auckland district, in 1898, was educated at the Whangarei High School, and joined the Education Department. He holds the degree of LL.B., and also the M.A. degree, both degrees having been obtained at Victoria University College. In the case of the M.A., _he obtained first-class honours in economics. He was a former president of the Victoria College Students’ Association, and was chairman of the Debating Society. In 1926 he was awarded the Jacob Joseph Research scholarship for economics. _ In 1927 when stationed in the Prime Ministers Department, Mr Campbell gained a University post-graduate scholarship in arts, which entitled him to two years’ duty in a British university.
