RACING NEWS.

JOTTINCS FROM AWAPUNI.

(By “^Binocular.”)

The conditions more closely resembled summer than autumn yesterday morning at Awapuni, a bright warm sun breaking through and tho after-breakfast workers carried out their exercises at a discomfort.

The’ big majority of local mentors havo now made the change-over, but owing to tho largeness of his'team G, W. New carries out the major portion of his serious work in tho early hours and is to be found hard at it immediately tho light appears.

G. W. New, who had been up in the Gisborne district, returned • homo yesterday, bringing with him another youngster to swell his lengthy string. During his absence, C. Norgrovc, who is well known in the Gisborne and Auckland districts, supervised the stable operations. Desert Lad (A. G. Murray), Tano (Grennoil) and Benmure (W. Broughton) were tirst out to run a strong working gallop on the plough over six lurlongs in which Desert Lad finished tho strongest to complete the distance in 1.22. Benmure, after keeping with his companions for half a mile, showed his old tendency to turn it up. • Desert Lad and Ta'ne will both go through to Masterton, the former being in tho Lawn Handicap, run over a mile, and in which he should make a good showing, while Tano is in the Novice Stakes. Tho latter is by King Mark —Valerie and is thus a half brother to that umart sort Valpre, but he does not promise the other's brilliance. It will be tho chestnut’s first outing Binco joining up with G. W. New’s establishment. Tane is tho property of Mr A. Douglas, of Waikouaiti, who also sent up to tho local mentor the Solferino —Marsa filly, but the half-sister to Nightmarch has not us yef put in an appearance on tho tracks, she being presumably still out in the Kairanga. A couplo of two-year-olds in Great Lady (Bisogno—Lady Elgiva) and King Acre (Acre —Sylvan Mar?h) wore sent along over half a mile, the former having tho services of J. Chapman and the latter A. G. Murray.. Tho youngsters, in running tho first two furlongs on the plough in 25 l-ssccs, and the full distance in 1.6 1-5, recorded quito a promising performance. Great Lady finished the better, and she will given an outng in the Juvenile Handicap at Masterton on Friday. King Acre, who is a slashing youngster of about 17 hands, will probably require time.

Blimp (J. Chapman) was sent along over seven furlongs on tho plough, the Gasbag gelding running the first two furlongs in 26sec, tho half mile in 54secs, and tho full distanco in 1.34 2-5. Blimp has been nominated for Hastings, but a herd track will not encourage his connections to muko the trip. Incidentally, negotiations aro in progress for tho purchase of the Foxton, Woodvilie and Napier Cups winner, but it will not 1 entail a transfer from the stable. Broad Aero is another member of the stable who is awaiting a softening of the tracks. The Acre gelding is lodking- all tho better for his recent racing and ho should strip a very fit horse when next he figures under silk. Lucky Bag has again joined up with the stable following a beneficial spell, but the Lucullus filly is being restricted to trotting exercise in the menntiino. Aurora Borealis,, who was due to make the trip through to the Mastorton fixture, is a doubtful starter, the Day Comet mare showing signs of soreness in the near front leg, although the seat of tho trouble is apparently dilticult to determine. Her stable companion, Rangi Sarto, while lie was brought to the tracks yesterday morning, was not exercised, tho old fellow having cut one of his legs slightly as the result of getting into some wire. However, the veteran should not bo inoommoded by it after a few days. Novar (T. Metcalf) and Skyrider (K. Voitre), who claim engagements in the Highweight and Lawn Handicaps respectively- at Mastorton, had Mister Gamp (R. G. Sratton) as a companion over seven furlongs on tho plough. Skyrider immediately jumped to the front with Mister Gamp bringing up the rear. The trio closed up turning for home, but Skyrider liung on to pass the post a length and a half clear of Novar with Mister Gamp another length back. Tho first two furlongs took 26£secs, und the full distanco 1.33 2-5. Hymestrason (K. Voitre) had Son o’ Mine (R. G. Stratton) as a companion over a seven furlong mission which occupied 1.36 after the first two furlongs had been left behind in 2b l-ssecs. Hymestrason was in the lead throughout, and although Son o’ Mine made up some of his leeway in tho run home, tho Hymestra gelding was clear at the post.- The Grandcourt —Clarinda two-year-old, who has still to be named, was to have accompanied Hymestrason through to Mastorton, but there is a possibility that neither will now make the trip. In company with Plane tho youngster ran homo from the three furlongs post in 39scc, but it has been deemed wise to give him a little more time. It will be unusual to find U. E. Hatch unrepresented at his home town fixture. Locarno (Larsen), Tiega (A. McDonald) and Elicit (Alister McDonald) jumped off at the six furlongs post on the plough to run homo in 1.21. Tiega led right into the straight, but Locarno gathered him up over the last pinch. Elicit was tailed off early and lie never threatened any real danger thereafter. Red Fuchsia, Glyn Du and Mountain Crag, who willa Iso represent Mrs McDonald’s stable at Masterton, fulfilled a like task in the same time, Glyn Du, wljq is a halfbrother by Kilbroney to Kalos, hanging on surprisingly well. Mountain Crag, on the other hand, was in the rear throughout, and although he made a forward move on the turn, ho failed to retain his position and again dropped back in tho run home. Black Acre, who was also to have made the trip, has gone sore and will consequently Be left at homo. GENERAL. With Elicit and Mountain Crag to represent tho one stable in the Highweight Handicap at Masterton, Alan McDonald will probably ride the former and Alister McDonald tho latter. Although Red Fuchsia was accepted for in both the Highweight Handicap and Lawn Handicaps at Masterton, the All Red Gelding is likely to start in the latter. Tioga, whose last appearance in public was in the Hutt Handicap at Trentham oyer twelve months ago, will go through with his engagement at Masterton. No rider has been engaged for him as yet, but Roy Reed may be offered the mount. R. J. Mackie, who has made a good recovery from the arm injury he sustained at Tauhorenikau at Easter time, will pilot Tresham, Ex Dono and Biseao in their Masterton engagements. Gay Ballorina, whose trip to the Ellerslie and Avondale meetings proved such a highly profitable one, returned to Awapuni to-day. Contrary to expectations, tho Lord Quex filly will winter in the Dominion under G. Jones’s care at Awapuni and will cross the Tasman in the epring. Commendation continues to got through his easy tasks on the track quito satisfactorily, and it may be that the Limond gelding will accompany Gay Ballerina when the filly goes over to Sydney in tho spring. Hqwevor, such is. in the lap of the gods. Of late, Commendation has been accompanied by Archeria in his light work, but with the return of Disrank from his spell, th Archery gelding was worked in company with tho Lord Quex gelding yesterday morning. Tho latter, while probably still somewhat dolicate, appears to be on the up grade. The Acre —Merotello filly, who was under R. E. Hatch’s charge, has been returned to ker 1 owner, the filly not having fulfilled her early promise. It is possible that she may j dome better with time. R. E. Hatch’s stable is at present sheltering Corbol, a four-year-old mare by CynicProjection, who is to be prepared for the hunting field. Keddar, who was accorded a brief spell following upon his Trentham and Foilding activities, is back again in the active ranks looking all the better for the let-up. Kilorell, who was galloped on on the first day at .Feilding, was accorded a short spell, but ho has rejoined J. Kelly’s 6tring, although the Kilbroney gelding is being restricted to trotting exercise in the meantime. • Among the absentees fnom the track at presont is Imperial Spark, the Crown Imperial II gelding having been granted a let-

up. The old fellow has raced consistently, if somewhat unluckily this season, but it ia evident that he is “slipping.” When H. H. Doyle went down to the Marlborough fixture he placed Bonnie Stream, a four-year-old mare by Starstream from a Sir Laddo .mare, in J. Kelly’s care and that mentor is continuing her education. She may bo found essaying the jumping game later on. Towards the end of the present month Doyle will again go south with Fee Simple for tho Nelson fixture.

King Hal has been again brought in by H. H. Doyle and the Chief Ruler two-year-old looks very well, he having grown and filled out in the interim. Ho has also taken in hand Marnhine, a four-year-old halfsister to Paonui.

Moutoa Treasury is being pottered about in the meantime by J. Hastie, the mentor now centring his attention on Moutoa Fume, a Gasbag filly out of Moutoa’s Gift. He recently sent Goldliko home, tho Gold Soult gelding having shown signs of unsoundness. v

Figuring among the youngsters being educated by G. W. New at present aro the Bisogno—Haligan two-year-old gelding, the Psychology—Flora Macdonald yearling filly and the Chief Ruler—Marceline filly, while he has also in hand the four-year-old Record Mixture, by Heather Mixture—Lady Sykes, who is thus a half-brothor to Gold Box.

L. Knapp ha s a lengthy string of jumpers to prepare for the winter activities, but with the tracks in their present state—they being very hard—there was not any jumping attempted yesterday morning. A recent addition to his string is tho Sir Antrim gelding, Scrap Iron, who is putting plenty of vim into his work.

Two former familiar figures on the race track in Askari und Wanderlust are at present serving in a new role, they acting as mounts for the training of future horsemen. J. McDowell, who is attached to R. E. Hatch’s stable, had his first ride on tho tracks yosterday morning on Askari when lie showod a fund of promise. However, he is not altogether a new chum for he has done well in the show ring in pony jumping events. R. Tirrell, who is one of G. New’s many boys, also showed that ho was quite at home on 'Wanderlust. The i racecourse staff have made a start with the sowing down of the inner oval whore a steeplechase course for the schooling of horses will be laid Jown with a pottering area for two-year-olds inside it. The former track, which will bo a chain wide, will havo permanent fences erected thereon and will fill a long felt want. In the meantime the steeplechase fences are positioned on No. 1 grass track, but rain is urgently ! required to soften the tracks. | When tho, four candidates went out for the All Aged Stakes at Avondale on Saturday (comments the Auckland Star) a local sportsman on the stand offered to take ton to one and bet Aussie would not’ finish in a place, in other words, that he would be last. It was a bold challenge to make, and he would have lost, but not by much, as Aussie could only finish third and it was by. a narrow margin that he boat Polyxona. Mr Paul’s gelding has accomplished so much over short courses, besides defeating the redoubtable Limerick at a mile, that the majority of backers would not hear of his defeat, and at the wind-up lie was at odds on. He had every chance and no excuse can be offered for his defeat other than that ho could not concede 261 b to the smart Gay Ballerina, or 291 b to the useful Eaglet. At the distanco Aussie was on the outside in line with Gay Ballerina and Polyxena, while Eaglet was just in behind them. Aussie battled on under his load, but the task was just a bit too much and ho finished third, the judge’s margins being half a head and a head. High Pitcli, winner of tho Foley Memorial, was purchased by his owner, Mr J. Irwin, for 300 guineas, and at the time there were many who considered he had considerably the worst of the deal. As a matter of fact the horse had been offered, and a sale practically completed to another Auckland sportsman at a price a good deal below 300 ; guineas, but Mr Irwin did not know this till after lie bought the horse. High Pitch had previously won the A.R.C. Railway Handicap, but it was because of his bad showing in the Easter Handicap in tho autumn following that his owner, Mr Gerald Stead, decided to sell him. High Pitch had shallow feet, and was always more or lees sore, and this caused Mr Irwin no little worry. However, with 300 guineas invested he had to display pa/tience and care, and this he did with the happy result that he has won fivo races with the son of Sarchedon —Shrill. High Pitch has hitherto always shown his best speed on soft tracks, but on Saturday on firm going he came along in fine 6tyle at the end, and showed determination in working-his way into the lead, and then keeping off a strong challenge on the part pf Corinax. Mr Irwin had no easy job in front of him when he set out to make. High Pitch a payable proposition, but he has accomplished much, and the success of High Pitch is a fitting tribute to the owner’s methods. EXTRA PERMIT. GLAIMS OF LEVIN. FOR FURTHER RACING. Tho Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. P. A. do la l’erclle) and the Inspector of Totalisators (Mr P. J, Kelleher), who are making a tour of inspection of racecourses with a view to considering applications for racing permits, visited Otaki, Levin and Foxton on Saturday, prior to proceeding to Palmerston North. In response to a telegram from the Minister, he was met at tho Levin racecourse by representatives l of the Racing Club, when the president (Mr Thos. Bevan), secretary (Mr F. Nicholson) and a number of the stewards were present. The Minister and the inspector were shown over the course and appointments, and their attention was directed to the many improvements effectod by the club in. recent years. « The president; took the opportunity to bring forward arguments in support of the club’s claim for tho restoration of the second day’s raoing permit. The club originated in 1884 and raced continuously till 1910, enjoying for many years a two days’ permit. Then the Gaming Commission, 6et up by the Government of tho day, reduced the number qf permits in New Zealand, and among the clubs to suffer was Levin, which lost both its day. This unfortunate .state of affairs lasted until the summer of 1915, when the club was granted a one-day meeting, which was held in that and the following year. Owing to the war, .the permit was withdrawn in 1917 and 1918, but was restored in 1919, since when a one-day meeting has been held annually. Hon. Mr Perelle, in replying, said it was too early for him to make any definite pronouncement, as he had not concluded his tour, but he thought that the club’s request for tho extra day seemed justified on the face of it.
