RANGIOTU NEWS

ROAD LEVEL IMPROVEMENTS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) * RANGIOTU, March 28. Excellent progress has already been made with the raising of the level of the road, between the culvert near the local post office and tho traffio bridge across the Oroua River, to the lovel of tho railway lino, averaging about three feet of filling along tho whole length specified. Tho sand and spoil required for tho filling are obtained from tho hill extending along the wholo frontage of tho school grounds and running parallel to tho road. Though barely a quarter of the scheme has so far been completed, a fair portion of the hill has been shifted to ground lovel. The scheme is undoubtedly a happy one indeed as it is serving a doublo purpose, both in tho much ncoded improvements to tho road level along tho railway station and by making vast improvements to the school site and property. > Moreover, with the increased motor traffic, and tho distorted idea somo motorists have that tho King's highways are solely constructed for speed tests in spite of tho notice boards to drive slowly, tho entrance to the school grounds has always been regarded as a dangorous ono to tho children, as tho view from the eastern side is hidden by tho hill which abruptly rises from tho main entrance. That menace will now bo greatly eliminated. The contractors aro wasting no timo in carrying out and getting the work under way, and should they be favoured with the same fine weather conditions as havo been experienced since tho commencement of tho work it is anticipated that tho job will bo completed well within schodulo timo. Tho metal required is brought by ballast train from tho Terraco End pits and tho County Council employ their own gangs to do portion of tho work in unloading and spreading tho metal. Work will resume after the Easter holidays and, as .soon as the new level for tho “one-way traffic,” is set and ready, filling operations on tho other half will commonco. MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB.
