BULLS NEWS

S-PORTS CLUB

(From Our Own Correspondent.) BULLS, Feb. 13.

Mr C. E. Vile presided over a well attended meeting of tho general committee of the above club on Monday evening. There were also present: Messrs W. K. Robbie, C. L. Anderson, S. Rich, J\ Read, T. Dunn, W. Ellery, A. J. Petrie, A. Jarvie, J. Trickor, 0. H. Ihorby, F. A. Holland and tho secretary, E. Broughton. Mr T. Dunn reported that he had been successful in securing the Feilding Pipe Band to supply music at the sports, and to play for the dancers. The price asked was very reasonable. It was agreed that tho track and surroundings required attention, and it was resolved to engage a carrier to remove the hay, and to engage men to cut the grate m the vicinity of the tents, and to cut and roll tlie greens for the golf events. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Jas. Bartlett for his offer of a trophy for a local cycle race, and the committee will confer with Mr Bartlett as regards the conditions of the race. It appears that the date of the sports meeting clashes with that of a sports gathering in Palmerston North, and tho chairman and others considered that it was unfair of the Palmerstonians to run ill opposition to the local club. The secretary was instructed to write to the Wanganui Centre pointing out the fact that two sports meetings were being held within 20 miles of each other on the same day, and asking the centre to take tho matter up with a view of preventing a recurrence Of clashing. It was decided to hold a working bee on ithe Domain on Tuesday, February 26, when it is hoped that all members will be asked to roll up and assist tio put the trucks in order for tho meeting. It was reported that O. H. Jenkins, tho well-known Wellington runner, would probably bo a competitor nt tho mooting, ami it was decided to try to tuT&nge a meeting between Jenkins and tho Taranaki crack sprinter, S. Black. „ 1.0.0. F. LODGE. N.G. Bno. J. Bromley presided over a good attendance of members at the 1.0.0. F. meeting on Thursday evening. After routine business had been disposed of, two new members were initiated by the P.G.’s of the Lodge.

OBITUARY. Mr Patrick Delaney, an old and respected resident of Rangitikei, died in the Wanganui Hospital on Sunday, and tho interment took place at Clifton cemetery, Bulls, on Tuesday afternoon. There was a good atendance of friends to pay their last respects to deceased, but if the fact of his death had been better known a much larger cortege would have followed. Mr Delaney is believed to have come from Victoria, Australia, but lie had resided in Bulls, Rata and other parts of this district for very many years, and, in his prime, was one of the best flaxcutters and axemen in these parts. A few- years ago he suffered a stroke, and he had not been able to do any strenuous work for some time. A number of floral tributes were placed on the grave, and the burial service was read by Rev. Mr White. Tlie pall-bearers • were Messrs W. Carter, E. J. Amon, H. Coe, T. H. Green, F. Hart and IJ.1 J . Keat—all old “mates” of deceased.

LIFE-SAVING EXHIBITION. Upwards of 500 people journeyed to Moana Roa on Sunday to witness the Castleclilf Life-saving Club members in action, and tlie gathering included Flock House boys, Bulls residents, and visitors from all parts of . Rangitikei, including Ohingaiti. Two pipers from the latter place were in attendance, and enlivened the proceedings with musical airs during the day. The road to the beach was in good order to the first sandhill nearing tho kiosk, and, while many went right thnough to tho seashore, tlie majority of motorists preferred to park their cars and walk the last few hundred yards to the waterfront. Tlit members of the Domain Board, in whom the seaside settlement is vested, were in attendance to receive tho members of the Life-saving Club, and although tlie latter wore detained through a minor motor mishap cn route they were hospitably entertained and .expressed themselves as delighted with the cordial reception accorded them.

The day was perfect for picnicking, being bright and fine, with little breeze, and the life-savers lost no time in entering the briny. Their example was followed by dozens of other swimmers, who were intensely interested in the exhibitions of reel and line, and the resuscitation methods demonstrated. After refreshments had been taken of, the visitors gave a second exhibition and lookers-on should have benefited by their demonstrations.

The collection taken up in aid of the Moana Itoa Improvement Fund met with a ready response, and it is the intention of the Domain Board to give the public another opportunity of assisting a worthy cause, when a “shop” will be held in Bulls, and produce, etc., disposed of to help the fund.
