NEW ALPHABET.

EFFECT IN TURKEY. PRESS REVOLUTIONISED. (Times Cables). LONDON, Dec. 2. The Times’s Constantinople correspondent reports that one outcome of the inauguration of the new Roman characters is the prolonged cinema house sessions. The captions on the screen are accompanied by explanations which the spectators do not readily grasp. The spectators insist on the words remaining on the screen so long that the performances are much extended.

The newspapers have quickly adapted themselves to the new conditions. They appeared to-day modelled on the journals of London and Paris, and instituted whole page photographs. The circulations have fallen heavily. There is only time to read one newspaper, but the public plod through the journal, because it is recognised that the reading of newspapers is the most practical method of becoming accustomed to the new alphabet. The newspapers have imported modern machinery for the change, and have also decided to adopt the Western make-up. Thus the new characters have entirely revolutionised the Turkish Press.
