CHRISTMAS GIFTS.
LEPERS REMEMBERED. LARGE VARIETY OF PRESENTS. (By Telegraph—Special to Standard.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 3. AVhen the Tofua sailed for the islands to-day she had on board 21 cases and three packages of Christmas gifts for the patients at the leper station at Makogai Island. The consignment represented the fruit of the efforts of Mr D. L. Thomas, of Mount Albert, who each year organises an appeal for suitable contributions. Tropical drapery, light summer clothing, tobacco and pipes, sweets and toys for the children were among the thoughtful presents despatched by the island steamer. Mr Thomas, who packed the gifts and arranged for their shipment, expressed his gratification at the generosity of the countless donors who responded to his appeal. He said that this season’s consignment was bigger than ever.
