SELF-DENIAL FIGURES. The Salvation Army self-denial appeal figures for the whole of New Zealand were announced at the Citadel last night when a special meeting was held and presided over by the Central North Divisional Commander, Lieut:Colonel Carmichael. Officers were present from a number of other corps, among whom was Adjutant Fraser who was stationed here two years ago but is now commanding officer at Wanganui. Between the speeches the songsters rendered two selections.the band played and Mr and Mrs H. Prince sang a duet. Lieutenant-Colonel Carmichael, in briefly outlining the purposes of the self-denial appeal, mentioned that the initial stages were akin to farmingj there was the ploughing time, followed by the sowing of the seeds, which flourished to maturity and, therefore, brought about the period of reaping. The harvest had now arrived in the self-denial appeal after much labour on the part of every soldier and junior of the Salvatiorf Army organisation in the Dominion, and before asking the representatives of the five divisions to make known the amounts collected the speaker congratulated every individual oh the interest and enthusiasm displayed. The Central North Division, which consists of 20 corps, showed a decrease of £631 9s 7d compared with lhst.year, but it has the honour of having collected the highest amount (£9547 0s 4d) in the New Zealand territory. Auckland Division, composed of 23 corps and'unattached towns, was second with £8450 against £9872 9s 6d, the large decrease being due to the fact that recently the. new Congress Hall was erected in Auckland and the Salvationists and adherents assisted financially towards the cost of the building. Adjutant Fraser represented the division while Staff-Captain Charker announced Central North’s figures. With a total of £7490 3s 5d Dunedin Division witnessed a fall on last year’s effort which was £Blll 7s 6d. Adjutant Campion spoke on behalf of the division. Adjutant Adams (Christchurch division) reported a deficiency of £123 5s 9d, the lowest decrease in New Zealand. The division is made up of 25 corps and attained a stun of £7IOO 12s lid. Wellington Division has 17 corps attached to it and raised the sum of £5638 12s Id this year, but during 1927 collected £6005 18s 2d. Adjutant Houston represented this portion of New Zealand territory.

For tiie whole Dominion £38,350 was raised and this will be used to extend, improve and assist the mission work in foreign lands and also the Dominion social organisations. Of the 115 corps only 30 showed an increase and 10 of those were in the Central North Division. The four city figures were: Wellington, 1927, £1979 14s 2d, against £1793 3s 8d this year; Auckland, £3OIO, £2431; Christchurch, £2488 Os 3d, £2544 7s 0d"; Dunedin £2373 19s 7d, £2IOO respectively. The local figures were: Palmerston North (Commandant Wheeler and Adjutant Marshall in charge) £534 13s 3d for last year and £SOB 17s 7d for 1928; Terrace End (the suburban corps under Captain Parkinson) registered a decrease of £2, this year’s total being £.72 5s Id.

Before the conclusion of the meeting Lieut.-Colonel Carmichael read a telegram from Commissioner Hay, the territorial commander. During the afternoon officers’ councils were conducted when about 35 officers were present.
