Received September 6, 8.45 a.m. CAPETOWN, Sept. 5. After a thrilling and spectacular game, played under New Zealand rules, tho All Blacks beat the Combined Universities’ team at Capetown to-day by one converted try, two unconverted tries and one penalty goal (14 points) to two tries and one penalty goal (nine points). Tho match was played on the Newlands ground before a crowd of 15,000. It was an excellent exhibition of New Zealand football under rules finely interpreted by J. Burrows (as referee), and it capped a memorable tour. The All Blacks’ team was as follows: Full-bjack.—H. Lilburne. Three-quarters.— C. Rushbrook, F. Lucas, B. Grcnside. Eive-eightlis.—M. Nicliolls, L. Johnson. Half.—W. Dailey. Forwards.—J. Hore, S. Hadley, M. Brownlie, I. Harvey, I. Finlayson, E. Snow, It. McWilliams, G. Scrimshaw. UNIVERSITIES’ FIFTEEN. The Universities’' team was as follows : Full-back.—Stierling. Three-quarters. Brink, Rousseau, Van der Westhuizen, J. J. Piennar, Gray, Hill: Halves.—Hofmeyr, T. G. Osier. Forwards.—J. Protorius, H. Osier, Taljaard, Wolheim, Bergh, Kunovsky.
A groat breakaway by Van dor YVesthuizen from tlie kick-off had the crowd on its feet, but Lilburne and Rushbrook managed to force after the ’Varsity man had short punted. Both sides threw the ball about in true ’Varsity style, and the next spectacular movement came when Lucas made a clever opening from the loose, the ball being handled by Finlayson, Harvey and Finlayson again before it was stopped. Piennar, the fast University wing, looked dangerous when ho intercepted. He punted over Lilburnc’s head, H.. Osier’s pace getting him to the ball, which he carried on for a good try, just evading Rushbrook by inches. Brink failed to convert. ’Varsities 3 All Blacks 0 After a fine forward attack McWilliams shot away from a line-out and, with a great run, scored at the corner. Nicholls missed the kick. All Blacks 3 ’Varsities 3 Just on half-time Nicholls, however, landed a penalty goal. All Blacks 6 ’Varsities 3 There was a fine movement from the kick off in the second spell, Gray getting the ball from the forwards? He short punted and, following up fast, beat Lucas for the ball to score a good try. ’Varsities 6 All Blacks 6 , CROWD CHEER FRANTICALLY. With the scores level the crowd, in true collegiate spirit, cheered frantically. ’Varsity commenced an attack, which ended in Brink kicking a penalty goal. ’Varsities 9 All Blacks 6 Clever work by the New Zealand forwards put them on the attack and then Dailey sent his backs away from a scrum. Johnson flung the ball far across to Grenside, and, coming round the outside, Lucas took his pass and raced over for a brilliant try. All Blacks 9 ’Varsities 9 Within a few minutes of no-sidc, Lucas, with fine anticipation and quick opportunism, snapped up the ball, beat two men and scored near the posts. Nicholls added the major points. All Blacks 14 ’Varsities 9 There was a rousing demonstration as the teams ieft the field. The All Blacks-are looking forward eagerly 'to their arrival home. All are fit. TEAM SAILING ON FRIDAY. They sail at daybreak on Friday.
