SHARP CRITICISM.

CHRISTCHURCH MAYOR TAKEN TO TASK. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sept. 5. The Mayor of Christchurch (Rev. J. K. Archer) was strongly criticised by Mr R. A. Armstrong, Hie president, at tire annual meeting of the Wellington Trotting Club held to-night. Referring to the intolerant section of the community who were seizing every oppoitunity to attack and kill sport, Mr Armstrong said that the people had >.u the recent hysterical outburst in Christchurch against the proposed Sunday arrival ot the Tasman fliers an indication of the lengths to which intolerance would go. “This outburst,” said the chairman, “was one of the most- striking examples of intolerance that lias ever come before tho people of this country. Rev. Mr Archer even went so far as to send a telegram to 'the gallant airmen asking them not to arrive oji a Sunday. These sportsmen, . in attempting to fly over such a great waste of ocean, show a grater practical trust in God and religion than people do who are so narrow minded as to pass such resolutions. Christchurch should he full of gratitude that the airmen have selected that city as the landing place in New Zealand without people protesting hysterically against tlieir arrival on a Sunday. ’
